Hi currently using Nikon 18-300 on D5100 body should I get sharp images ? As I don't think the images I'm taking are pin sharp .
I have used tripod , delay , remote cable , no matter what I do they don't seem as sharp as others you see on the groups.
Would I be better upgrading the camera or the lens ? I like landscape and nature, also don't have pots of money so any suggestions would be appreciated .

Which 18-300 do you have? The early version did ok on 12 MP, but 16 MP was too high a resolution for it as that sensor outresolves the lens. The later, slower version is much sharper. You might try to find a used 16-85 and a 70-300VR to replace the superzoom and get much better technical quality without having to spend too much.

The D5100 is a quite capable little body, even if later D5xxx and the D7xxx series are even more capable. You can rent an AF-S prime or get one of the cheap f/1.8 primes to check that there is nothing that needs adjustment in your D5100. You might get lots of use out of a 35/1.8DX or AF-S 50/1.8 without the lenses breaking the bank.

Another factor is that most of the images you see on the groups are post-processed and sharpened to some degree when reduced in size and exported to .jpg.

Yes, but what two products. You are asking us to guess what items you mean as superzooms, normal zooms, telezooms and primes are all mentioned in the discussion so far. We aren't mind readers.

We don't know what product costs $1000 or what product costs $700 so there is no real way for us to tell you the reason or reasons for the difference in price.

1/3 of a stop in light transmission faster, 19 elements instead of 16 and 9 blades in the aperture all add to the production cost. The nice thing is that the cheaper, slower lens is sharper because it is a newer lens. It isn't as sharp as the VR versions of the AF-P kit zooms, but superzooms can be convenient.
