Hello,

I currently have a D3100, which i have had for a few years, and have started thinking about upgrading on a limited budget

Ive seen a second hand D7000 priced at around £270

And on this forum, it looks to be a popular camera

I wondered what anyone elses opinions were?

Any opinions are much appreciated

Thank you

Phil

The D7000 is in the "semi-pro" tier of cameras, so you'll notice and increase in build quality and performance overall.  Not a bad choice though it's possible you could get a D7100 for cheap too.

Phil, how much of an upgrade the d7000 is depends on what you want to shoot with it. For instance, the AF in the D7100 is quite a bit better, so is the signal to noise ratio at high ISO. If those factors aren't important, the D7000 makes perfect sense. If you like to shoot small birds hiding in branches or experiment with available dark photography, holding out for a used D7100 might be better.

One nice thing about the earlier D7xxx bodies is that they work with all AF lenses and manual focus lenses from 1977 onwards. The D7500 is not as backward compatible as the earlier models.

Hi there

I'm looking to upgrade from a D3100 to....

At first I was looking at a D7000 but for the money it doesn't seem much of an upgrade
So now I have been looking at the D5500 which seems a more substantial upgrade

Just wondered what anyone's views were..and if there will be any compatibility issues with lenses

Many thanks

Phil

If lenses work with the D3100 then there should be no problem for them to work with both the D5xxx and D7xxx series

Just in this one post I can see why it was a good idea to join here

It's not always obvious to an amateur the differences between the different models

Many thanks for the advice

I upgraded my seawater infected D80 last year. The main reason for choosing the D7000 was it being the first body in the range to have the flash command system. Once you've remotely controlled flash levels, you don't want to go back.

I paid about £230 for body only, from MPB. My first shoot with it was glamour studio, the day it arrived.

One of my favourite features is the user defined settings. I use some old manual focus, manual aperture lenses. U1 gives me a quick aperture priority setting for hasty aircraft shots. U2 adds back button focus.
