Need thoughts on nikon 3300 auto focus that I am having... it won't properly focus unless in "live mode" looking thru viewfinder blurry and won't take picture- live mode and manual focus fine- focus modes reset- camera reset- battery pulled for length of time- both lenses cleaned (and does same with both reg and telephoto)
Any help or ideas appreciated

Same issue here with a d5200. Did you solve it?

The focussing mode through the viewfinder uses a different system and technology, than the focussing by viewfinder.

I.e. there are two *independepent* systems. (So one could work and the other fail)

Focussing through the viewfinder has part of the light that arrives on the mirror to be deviated to the focus system while the other part is deviated to the viewfinder.

The reasons for this sub-system to fail can be different (camera got a shock which misaligned the mechanics, the mirror is quite dirty, electronics failure, etc.).

As you have already done all operations to ensure that there is no user mis configuration, best is to bring it to a Nikon shop for a check up.

Same issue here with a d5200. Did you solve it?

See above.

But did you also check that you have not used a setting that could cause this mis behaviour. I.e. Checked that the focus switch on your lens is set to A, that focus points are where you expect them, what focus mode you have set, tried a different lens, etc.

For being able to assist you, best would be if you could post a photo without removing the EXIF, showing the problem that you have.
