Hi,

I am looking to upgrade from the kit lenses included with my D3300 and have been looking on ebay.

I have come across a Sigma 17 - 70mm f/2.8 and would like to know if it will be compatible on my  camera, I contacted the seller and he has used it on a D5100 but could not guarantee it would work on the D3300. I use my camera in manual focus so the auto focus is not important to me.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Which lens is this? The f/2.8 is 17-50, the 17-70 is either f/2.8-4.5 or f/2.8-4. I *think* the f/2.8-4 need an updated firmware version to behave on the D3300.

Hi Merci 61,

Thanks for your reply, it's the f2.8 - 4.5 version. When you say updated firmware is that just for the auto focus ?

Thanks again.

I don't think there is any problems with the f/2.8-4.5. The firmware update is for the stabilization in the f/2.8-4. Beginning with the D5300 and D3300, Nikon started using more of the communication protocol that has been there in the lenses, but unused by the earlier bodies. This caused problems with lenses with reverse-engineered chips as the instructions weren't detectable to decrypt when the lenses were made.
