Thought we should make a single thread to discuss this camera rather than the various bits n pieces.
And, an interesting thing I see on the Sony Alpha rumours page (and probably others but that's where I saw it).

There is speculation this camera actually may have a hybrid OVF/EVF. It would be a first for a DSLR. I believe the Fuji X-Pro has one to give a Rangefinder feel to the camera.

Now, this would be interesting. And would throw the cat amongst the pigeons.

Ken Wheeler made the prediction yesterday morning after the supposed press photos leaked.

He described what he saw as a bulbous prism housing, a button next to the diopter control, and two holes at the top of the eyepiece as being indicators that Nikon has put an electronic display behind the final facet of the prisim.

He also cited a Nikon patent of this from 2013. He's been wrong before, but has been right about many things Nikon.

If it turns out to be true, I'll have a D810 for sale.

If true, I suppose it depends on the second part of the puzzle; the autofocus in mirror up mode.

If Nikon's patent for BSI sensors with dual pixel phase detection is an indication of what is to be used here, it could be another game changer for Nikon. But it seems awfully soon as that was less than a year ago.

Perhaps that is why it is not ready.

In any event, if true it should be the new norm for prism equipped bodies going forward, and an ingenious hybridization of SLR and ML. It will give use what we want from mirrorless while simultaneously maintaining the advantages of SLR and the F-mount ecosystem.

Could be exciting if they get it right.
Come to think about it, the hype about the insane low light capability may very well indicate a BSI sensor may indeed be in play. If so, expect it to be pricey initially.

History. The sensor for the D810 was the same used in the A7R released a year earlier.

And Sony made a point of publicly announcing that they will only provide their previous generation of sensors to others (Nikon and Pentax) and will always have the newest tech in their cameras first.

I've read a lot of rumors about this thing.... everything from it being a total mirrorless camera to the hybrid stuff you guys are talking about. I just hope it turns out to be a worthy D810 replacement. And, I think at least some people at Nikon understand that, given all the negative press they've received lately, they have to hit this one out of the park.

It's not going to be mirrorless, this we definitely know. A hybrid viewfinder puts it out of the park. Without one and just the expected bump in mega pixels, the D5 auto focus, tilting touch screen this is safely into the outfield.

Also just announced will be 4k video with no crop. I know not really a highly desired feature here, but that's a big poke in the eye to Canon and really makes a statement that they are taking video very seriously. If they have managed to find a Canon like dual pixel auto focus system, which gives incredible video focusing abilities then this will be HUGE. And just what Nikon need right now. Here's hoping.

The latest I've heard is that it will be a 'baby D5' and that the price will be about a 1000 euro above the D810, which will remain in the line. That pretty much puts it out of my league.

 

Yeah, the video bits are cool but not really my bag. And, I doubt if they're going to unseat Canon in the prosumer video market anywy. Canon has too big a lead and, soon.... very soon, 4K will be yesterday's news.
