Nikon D800 err problem

57,000 clicks
In studio shooting with strobes wireless control on hotshoe
60mm micro, battery grip
Shot for 10 minutes on manual, of products and err comes on
Took out battery, cards, for 30 minutes
Changed lens, battery, cards
Cleaned camera contacts and lens contacts
Camera clicks softly does not capture, push shutter button again it clicks and mirror goes up revealing shutter.
cannot change any settings on camera unless you click the shutter once, it fires soft not lifting the mirror, after you click once you can now change settings, although, no live view at all. Click shutter button again and the mitrror lifts and reveals sensor but does not capture any image. The live view does not work and no image is captured.
Click once soft click no mirror lift. Can now use mirror lock up, lock up mirror works fine and sensor is revealed.
Once you put the camera in live mode that does not work, it freezes up and need to take battery out to reset
Err does not go away
Anyone have any problems like this? Or any ideas of what to do before I send it in for repair?
Thanks
Kevin

Hi, Kevin!
Did you have any luck resolving your problem? I have the exact same problem. It's like the image sensor has died. I can put on any lens and the exposure will be like the lens cap is on, apart from the fact that there will be no exposure. No image captured. No file on the card. Tried multiple cards. Formatting cards is no problem. Most of the other functions of the camera works, but it's not able to capture any image. Going to live-view will just hang the whole camera with no image displayed. The only way to wake it up again is to eject the battery and insert it again. I made around 250 shots earlier today with no other. It's been a solid workhorse for many years and I have no plans to replace it.

yes I sent it in to Nikon
no warrabty left its been 5 years since I bought the camera
they repaired it and sent it back
i contacted them to ask what they repaired and they would not tell me!!!
they or whom ever does the emails in nsupport pretty much said they did not know
well, they did not because its the same problem still
it cost 350.00 to repair plus ship
i used it in the studio again and same problem
been trying to get them to send me a pre paid mailer for some time now
they did say its under warranty
as soon as i put the transmitter on the hot shoe it stopped working just like before
wainting to send it back again
good luck with Nikon Kaliv
makes me think hard about canon?

Hi again Kevin,
The info about the hotshoe is interesting. I had a speedlight on when the shit hit the fan. But I had been using that flash for about 50 shots earlier that day. No other problem than the flash itself, which refused to fire for a while. Not even a pilot flash when triggered off camera. (Nissin Di866) But I tried later, and then suddenly it was back in business and I fired it from the camera for many times.
I delivered it to Kameradoktorn (the Camera Doctor) here in Stockholm yesterday. The guy I spoke to thought it was a shutter problem, but I don't think so. Anyway, they'll send it to Nikon in Solna for repairs. (It's just a suburb of Stockholm) It's the second time the camera is there for repairs. When I bought it, the shortcut format (red) and the shortcut reset (green) didn't work. The shop had an identical camera on display with a few notches different serial number, which had the same problem. Both went to Solna. When I got it back, the whole body was new. Not a single scratchmark anywhere. Only the square identity module was the old one. The shuttercounts would not match up, if you looked at the different counters. It had done about 6000 shots when I bought it and had registered about 10 when I got it back.
I'll probably have to wait a week or so, until they get back to me with an estimate. The body is still worth north of €1000, so I'll at least accept €500. If it gets more than that, I'll probably look for a second hand 810. The 850 is way too expensive for the casual shooting I do. And I'm quite happy with the performance of the 800E and never felt the urge for an upgrade. We'll see what happens, and I'll post here whatever I get to know about this issue.

The D810 is all plastic too, The D800 has metal. Sounds like they gave you a different camera back. maybe they sent you a new one. If it works whats wrong with that ?
just sent mine back in under the new warranty see if they can repair it this time
the bad news is i use this camera to make a living. and if i cant depend on it that sucks
i'm using my backup D7100 which is a poor camera from Nikon. The exposures are not consistant, and I shoot on manual most of the time. color temps are all over,
when using the D7100 i have to do a ot of retouching
the d800 was right on when working
I am so close to selling everything and going to canon
Ive had Nikon cameras and lenses since 1970

After three weeks, I just got an estimate from Nikon Sweden:
7370 SEK including 25% sales tax, which translates to around USD 930!
Replacement of electronics, replacement of bayonet, unspecified upgrades, replacement of rubber wrapping, full calibration.
I presume that the electronics replacement is either the image sensor or the complete processing unit, since there isn't much else to choose from. Since a full calibration is needed, my guess is that it's the image sensor.
...and yes, I accepted the estimate. My reasoning is that they do almost a full refurbishment for that price, while if I buy another second hand for more, I don't know what I'm getting. If I can make it survive another 3-4 years, I'll be happy.

I got the camera back last Thursday and have shot around 50 images with it since then. Both with and without external flash. Outdoors in -15 degC weather and indoors, a little warmer.
It seems to work like it did earlier. I got no extra information about what was done to it. Hopefully this was the end of this issue for the next lots of years. Knock on wood!
