Sometime before midnight (whatever time zone you are in) this Sunday, 16 July 2017, post the best photo you have taken this week. Any subject, any style—just give us your best shot.

If you can, list your EXIF info and any special lighting setups you may have used.

P.S. The editing exercises are taking a break for the summer, but feel free to play around in the old exercises.

P.P.S. Peter is running a fun single lens challenge that we are all invited to participate in.

I'll be very early this week. Here is a sunshot with lots of refraction and internal ghosting. The cloud cover was dense enough, but with a well-defined sun disc, to do one of these on digital without risking damage to the sensor. This type of shots can damage the mirror, mirror box, sensor or all of them as well as your eyesight, so don't try making one without thinking things through. I you want to play with sun shots, get an old analog body and load it with slow slide film to learn on before risking your expensive digital. When everything is right, they can be quite striking.

Your advice on shooting the sun is well-timed--we've got a full solar eclipse happening near the end of August, and I've been wondering about what I might need to do or acquire to attempt getting some shots of it. I haven't even begun researching, but I've been thinking about it.

Nicole, get a Full-aperture solar filter from an astronomers' supplier, calibrate your exposure using the full sun a day or two before. Shoot with f/11 or f/16 and a series with every 1/3 step from 1/4000 to 1/15 at base ISO. Evaluate the histograms from the whole series and choose one that is as far to the right as possible without blowing any channel. If the sky is hazy, you can count on a difference of about 1 stop.

Perfect. Thank you for the clear and succinct advice. I'll start looking into it immediately. I imagine the solar filters will be in high demand--this eclipse is a pretty big deal over here.

It has to be this one due to the problems these little devils have given me in the past.

I didn't get much camera time in this week.  This is the only photo that I made public all week.

I spent a couple days in Oregon this week.  Very hard to pick just a couple shots in such a beautiful state.

Mr. Nova85, thank you for your beautiful photography and your kind words in regards to Oregon.  These places you have shot are approximately 1 1/2 hrs., from our home in Beaverton, Oregon.  Greatly appreciated.

Tony

Posting a couple of weeks late, but I did take some photos this week! Got too caught up in work and such. Had a bridal portrait session at the Utah State Capitol building. I really need to not mention it as an option when I have brides to shoot. It's a great location, but it's a bit over done. Anyhow, some of you have seen me post photos of other brides at these very same doors. Heh... Can't help it. I just like the drama they create.
