Hey All,

Sorry if this has been posted before - but I'm a beginner with photography and wondering what settings would be best and times would be best to capture some good sunrise shots around my hometown in Northern NSW of Australia.

Sunrise this week is roughly 6.40am, First Light at 6.14am.

TIA, Jake

Hi! I'm very patronage about sunrise pictures my self! Definitely photograph everything for sunrises during golden hour witch is usually the first hour of light. Set your ISO as low as you can and in direct sunlight set your shutter speed higher. Everything else is "seasoned to taste" which really means just do what you think looks good!

Hope everything goes well with you photos!

Agreed on the points above, and also make sure you get to your location with enough time to setup.  Also take into consideration if the spot is popular.  There may be other shooters who get there before you, so they will kind of set the tone on whether you're shooting wide or long, depending on where they are set up.

We live in a high humidity location, and one other fun fact we've found is that we need to be there at least half an hour early. That's to get the cameras out of the house or car and let the lenses and mirror defog.

Scout your location in day time. Use apps like PhotoPills to determine when the sun will rise and where on the horizon it will be.

I'd be there at least by 5:30, ready to go not long after that.

Sunrise magic happens before the sun rises. Then it's over very quickly.

As for settings, you will need a tripod. Shoot at base ISO (usually 100), aperture can be anything really from f4 to f22, although in the middle around f8 to f16 is probably best. And shutter speed will be whatever is needed to get the other two settings.
