If anyone hasn't already noticed, Photobucket have decided to disable off-site links unless you pay a fairly large fee, about $400 a year for the most expensive level of their professional hosting service. As a result more and more users are suddenly finding that the photos they've previously posted are being blocked - the only way to see them is to go to Photobucket. Which is bad enough, but it looks like quite a few people can't get them to work in photobucket either because of all the pop ups etc.

Funnily enough the most common reaction seems to be to find another photo hosting service.

I'm in the process of sorting this out for my own photos, but it will probably take a while. Meanwhile my apologies since most of the images I've posted are now showing Photobucket's error message.

For something like $120/yr you can get your own host via a shared host like DreamHost (I can provide you an affiliate link that will save you quite a bit off your first year - if you're interested).

You'd have your own domain and virtually unlimited storage to host anything you want.

Another GREAT alternative is Google Photos which has wonderful sharing, and unlimited free storage for medium to high rez JPEGs, OR paid storage with a free 5-10GB for unlimited resolution/raw files (which it will render), and you can purchase more storage if you need to. It really is quite amazing how their AI algorithms allow search based on content with NO tagging/keywords needed.

And if you want your own site but have no web design skills there is also Square space which has beautiful templates and is very reasonable. Check out T&C videos for discount codes.

I find all of the above better for hosting and sharing photos than the conventional players (Flickr, PB, etc.)

I've got my own web site which probably has enough room and costs rather less, I'm looking at alternatives since I don't particularly want to get into the business of managing photos. Google is beginning to sound like a possibility, I've been struggling with Flickr and haven't enjoyed the experience.

Google Photos is great... web browser, and Android/iOS apps. Search for dogs and it will show you every photo with a dog in it. Other percs as well. Check it out.

In the end I've gone with Flickr - I realised what I was doing wrong and it seems to work well now I'm not making idiot mistakes.

Apparently Denver's Better Business Bureau has just dropped Photobucket's rating to F, the lowest they do, citing fifteen complaints since they changed their terms and no response from the company.

what a surprise...
