I have wondered for a while if the latest versions of Nikon lenses have been designed to work well with a new mirrorless via an adapter, going back to the 1 series yes most Nikon lenses worked but not always fully.

They officially announced it now. It's on Nikon Rumours. No details other than confirming they are working on a new mirrorless camera.

I read somewhere the new E series lenses with electronic aperture controls is for a future mirrorless release.

That would be pretty disappointing as 'E' lenses are few, and some of the priciest in the lineup.
