Yes, Adobe PS 5.1 has a RAW editor

I always knew… or thought so, that RAW files can't be altered in
anyway, by anything! Tweaking the way recorded data will display

is only done through scrip xmp files added in the RAW folder and

will be read to reflect the tweaks upon conversion… or thought so.

I also knew… or thought so, that PS was using Camera Raw soft-

ware for conversion as PS can handle anything but RAW files… or thought

so.

My new fav has become DxO PL. I used to prefer Nikon's software, but this just does a better job for me, with much nicer interface.

I still use Affinity Photo for stacking and compositing, but was never happy with the Raw conversion.

Language barrier maybe, I've never been the best at explaining myself.  Yes its a RAW editor and its infinitely better than anything Corel Paintshop has come up with which is why I still use it, even though I now have to convert files to DNG to use it.  However once your done tweaking all the things you want to and save the file you can't save it to the original RAW file. You have to save it to a different format, my preferred one is .png.

If you're up for a challenge on RAW editing try RawTherapee it's free and has so many bells and whistles I think you need an engineering degree to understand it all.

Affinity is a great pixel editor but too limited for Raw

conversion. I use HeliconFocus for stacking.

 I use HeliconFocus for stacking.

I tested Helicon at Peter's suggestion, and while it is faster than AP, and can have fewer artifacts in some nodes, I found it deeply disturbing in the out of focus elements of the background.

Granted I did not invest a lot of time tweaking every possible setting, but for me AP did the better job.

What about Android editing software? I'm currently switching from an iPad to an Android tablet, but I can't get rid of the iPad until I'm happy with photo editing.

Photogene was great on iOS, but I can't find an equivalent on Android. Lightroom still hasn't loaded 3 RAW files after 10 hours, Snapseed is a bit flaky, its crashed a couple of times, PhotoMate3r has good connectivity over a network, but hasn't presented me with an editable picture yet!

My workflow is:

  • Ingestion into Photo Mechanic.
  • Rating and keywording in PM.
  • Batch conversion followed by individual tweaking in Capture NX-D with export to .tif in the original folder.
  • If necessary, I run the files through the Google NIK filters.
  • Adjusting IPTC on the .tif files to reflect the output targets.
  • Export and when applicable watermarking with PM, sometimes followed by sharpening for output medium with Google NIK Sharpener Pro.
There are cases where I run a file or set of files through specialist applications like Autopano Giga or Zerene Stacker, or sometimes Photoshop when I need to work in layers.

My workflow today is:

  • Copy RAW folder from card to desktop
  • Launch Capture One
  • Batch Renaming, culling and keywording in Capture One
  • processing in Capture One
  • watermarking and exporting as needed in Capture One
  • Pixel editing in Affinity Photo

NB:

  1. I never sharpen my pictures
  2. I never add saturation
  3. I never use vibrance (does not exist in Capture One!).
