Hi everyone . My name is Kim . I am a Registered Nurse living in the great country of Texas for the past 20 years . Life has been  "happening" for the past 10 years . Now in my modest  attempt to find myself , I have taken up what I believe may be the two most fun hobbies of all time which are road cycling and photography . Having tagged along  with my boyfriend while he was buying his new camera , I could hardly stand it and walked out the door with my new purchase of a Nikon 3400. Yah!! So , for the past 1 month since then I have been enjoying my new hobby and I am in total awe of all of your skills ,expertise ,and results of your knowledge evidenced in the photos that Chris has been showing me on this forum. So here I am after having just completed a great photography course for beginners that focused on people who have never used a camera. That would be me. .I surely welcome any feedback from your great minds.I'm enjoying my new hobby.

Welcome to the forums!

As a new photographer, don't miss Nicole's Your best... weekly minichallenges. You can learn quite a lot by looking on the photos there and reading about how they were made. Another good resource for the beginner is the editing exercises, where we all have shared how we have achieved the results we have from the same raw file each week. They are all still open if you want to try your hand at editing somebody else's raw files. If you post something in them, both I and the file submitter will probably give feedback on your work. The probably is a matter of the file submitter not always still being active...

One thing to remember is a cultural thing on the site. We try not to give critique unless invited either by a line or two in the posting or the photo being posted in the critique subforum.

Welcome!  I was brand new to photography about a year and a half ago.  I've learned a lot since then, but still have a long way to go.  For me, that's one of the attractions - there's so much to learn about.  This book was a great help for me.  I've gone back to it a few times since I first read it.  It's well written and easy to understand.  I highly recommend to anyone starting out.

Welcome, Kim! Just saw your post finally show up in the "Your Best Photo..." challenge--thanks for sharing. Glad you're here!

Thanks for the reminder, Peter! I love this about the culture here--I think it has helped keep people feeling positive and encouraged. I don't see the bickering and hurt feelings here that I see in some other places. A good critique can strengthen your work, to be sure, but if it's not solicited, it may do more harm than good. (By the way, I should probably note that I don't consider saying something positive about someone's image to be critique. :) )

And if you're someone who learns by reading, I would second Mark's recommendation--that is a great book! In fact, I should probably reread it sometime soon...
