I just upgraded from a D3000 to a D5500 because by some maybe drunken stroke of luck, I'm shooting a music festival this weekend.

 

I've got 2 lenses and I'm renting 2 for the weekend, but the one I'm having an issue with is my Sigma 10-20mm EX 1:4-5.6 DC HSM.  It doesn't seem to want to autofocus at all.

 

The Sigma AF still works fine on the D3000, and the stock lens AF works fine on both.

 

I've played with some of the AF settings and updated to the current firmware and still have no luck.  Still reading through the manual looking for solutions, but I need suggestions!

I had the same problem with that lens and a D3300. Your options are to return it to Sigma for a firmware upgrade, or replace it.

In my case, I sold it and replaced it with the new Tamron 10-24 VC HLD. Very happy with that decision.

There are quite a few Sigma lenses that need a firmware update to work on the newer bodies as Nikon have expanded the communications protocol in later years.
