New to View NX-i.  When I edit and save an image, NX-i applies a Brush icon to the thumbnail frame and reflects my edits in the thumbnail.  When NX-i reopens the image, I get the edited version.  But if I open the file with any other application I get the original, unedited file.  NX-i is putting the edited files somewhere else.  Where?

 

View NX-2 created a separate ORIGINALS folder for unedited files and placed them there when edits were saved.  Both edited and original files were fully accessible.  NX-i is not doing this.  Instead it creates a folder labeled NKSC_PARAM, but it does not place anything into this folder that I can see.  I get the message "No File is Selected" when I open the folder.

 

Have uninstalled and reinstalled NX-i to no avail.

 

What am I missing?

Raw files are always originals. I'm guessing View does the same as Capture... storing edits as metadata in the params folder.

It is doubtful apps other than Nikon's will recognize (and apply the changes recorded within) that metadata.

What are the proper steps to follow after editing a photo in Viewnx-i if you want to save the edited picture.

 

How do you Compare the edit to the original before you decide to save it? Can it be done side by side while still working on picture?

 

 

I see Compare 2 Photos in menu but I must not be following the right steps from there!

 

I'm also having an issue finding the edited version later when I was fairly sure I had worked on a photo. Usually it shows up in the Pictures folder (Win 10) as a single photo outside of all the folders with an additional _01, _02 numbering count up attached at end number sequence. What happens to pictures you "save as"  VS just save - yes or no box pop up before converting.

 

I get a pop up box asking do you want to save changes? I've been assuming there's no way to change the original - permanently ruining it if edits went bad. Is that a false assumption?

Laurie, do you shoot in .NEF or in .JPG? If you shoot in .NEF, View NX-i saves your edits in a sidecar file that it hides in the params subfolder.

 

Save as should prompt you for a file name and a destination. Save saves the edits under the same file name, overwriting the original if it is a .JPG file. Export lets you change the size and compression as well as the file name and destination. Save as and Export will prompt you if you try to overwrite the original file.

 

I am not familiar enough with the Windows version to give advice on where you change the default file locations.

Last week I turned the Raw plus .JPG Fine back on.

The first time I took my new camera out after watching all the youtube videos I could find - most said shoot in raw or both - BUT this was the first camera I've owned that didn't come with a disc/software in the box (or directions to a website) and I didn't know how to open the raw files. (And windows said it couldn't either  

 

So I switched to just .jpg\fine. (AND gave myself permission to stop fretting about learning everything at once. My D5500 takes pretty good pictures on AUTO. I still take back up shots on auto first, before practicing other settings

 

Haven't tested raw out much yet. Haven't gone anywhere. Of course while I'm walking the dog I only see a huge OWL that poses on a branch for 5 minutes when I leave the camera home

.... Is it because they are not .NEF files, that these folders seem empty?

Recent editing effort - It looks like I didn't overwrite these originals after all.

 

I have some moose and sunrise pictures I would be interested in participating in the exercises this group does with editing. Although they are jpg/fine so far as I know.

I don't know much about drop box?

If you try to open the parameter file directory in View NX-i, it won't show the parameter files as they aren't photos. You need to check with explorer what you have in the directory, if anything.

 

The editing exercises are officially taking a break, but if you want to run one or two on your files, feel free to start one. You can copy/paste what you want from the rules and host your files wherever you want to. The reason we used Dropbox is that it is filetype-agnostic, so it is possible to share any file you want. If you do run an editing exercise, you can shoot me and Nicole a PM so we can push for it in the other weekly exercises/challenges.

YOU should tell it where to put them!

My Fix... for what it's worth (it took me 2 tries

 

When you "finish" editing a picture and click Convert Files a pop up will ask if you want to save changes/ click yes. Another box will open. Down in the bottom 3rd of that box is a Save in: drop down box. I chose "same folder as originals" (this time!). Check mark the box for Change file names and click Naming Options. (Another box will open!) Click the bubble to fill in New Name + Original. (This helps know which photo you edited if there are a lot of similar shots.) I typed edit in the space provided. I also checked Reset number box.

 

I know just enough to get myself into trouble messing with settings. But this is working for me...
