I have heard good things about the AF-S 35 1.8G, does anybody use it? I have 2 zoom with that focal length but of course much slower. I do quite a bit of outdoor shooting as well as pet photography.

I have one. I haven't used it much yet but it is a nice sharp lens. It has a rubber seal on the mount so it's weather resistant. For landscape it will be ideal.

I have one too and like it. It replaced the venerable Nikkor-O 35/2 for my use and is even better than that Classic, apart from it's size. I have a gallery up here 35/1.8 - Gallery - NikonForums.com

I assume you're referring to the FX lens and not it's DX cousin. If so, I can also recommend it. The sample I have is among the sharpest lenses in my collection. It works equally well on both DX and FX bodies but, as Peter said, it's a bit large... tho not terribly so.
