You should see more points when you half-press the shutter button. Is that what happens?

One focus box lights up? Depending on where you point your camera, does it change from one location to another in your viewfinder?
The 51 points means the camera will auto-focus on one of those 51 points based on what the camera believes is the main subject. It cannot focus on all 51 points at the same time. The box that is lit up is showing you which box the camera chose as the focus point when you pushed down half way on the shutter.

This eBook is a great resource for learning everything you need to know about Nikon's autofocus systems.
Secrets To The Nikon Autofocus System: DSLR Edition – Backcountry Gallery Web Store
$15 well spent, in my opinion.

Sunshine. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the link to that book. Tried to take spur of the moment shots this weekend when we saw a crop duster. My first time shooting any real action in AF-C since I'd switched to back button, and first time trying 3-D tracking. The shots will obviously NOT be appearing on this forum ha! Everything was just a little soft. Downloaded that book yesterday, and in <15 minutes figured out what I was doing wrong. No worries, lots of crop dusters where we live, hope to have some good shots soon. Thanks again.
