As some here may know I rented and then purchased a Nikon 80-400 mm Nikon lens.

About three weeks after I purchased the lens the front rubber started coming loose. I would just push it back on. Only a portion would come loose. That problem has gone away but now after two months I am seeing dust particles that seem to be deep in or under the outer glass. I called the Lens Rental place and they said the two items may or may not be related but mostly the dust is normal for this lens because it moves so fast and I don't really need to be concerned as the particles won't or shouldn't effect my pictures??? Is this right? Do others that have this lens get the dust particles in it? If so how often do you send them in to be cleaned?

The lens rental place said I could send it back in and they would clean it for free while under their warranty but my concern is if it gets that dirty in 90 days then how often will I have to have it cleaned.

It sucks dust in, but it will take a tremendous amount to degrade the picture quality. I usually let Nikon or a certified repair center do a CLA on my heavily used AF zoom lenses every 18 months or so with a 24-month interval on my less used zooms and the primes. Manual focus lenses will get the CLA when I notice an increase in drag on the focusing ring. This will keep wear to the focusing and zoom mechanicals down as well as keeping the internal dust under control. To me, it makes sense to protect the lenses and bodies by having them serviced now and then just like a car or other mechanically complex larger expense.

Thank you so much!
