Sometime before midnight (whatever time zone you are in) this Sunday, 14 May 2017, post the best photo you have taken this week. Any subject, any style—just give us your best shot.

If you can, list your EXIF info and any special lighting setups you may have used.

P.S. The editing exercises are taking a break for the summer, but feel free to play around in the old exercises.

P.P.S. Peter is running a fun single lens challenge that we are all invited to participate in.

Heh--I actually have something to share this week. :) Did a senior portrait session tonight--had tons of fun. This girl had a great smile and wasn't afraid to be silly.

Thanks, Ron. Her dad is a dentist--of course the smile was the first thing he noticed when I showed him a few previews on the back of the camera.  :D

A dentist... I might have known!

That would indeed make a great advertising photo for her dad's practice. I hope he doesn't use it for that without compensating you!

Me too. But I don't think he would--I think he works for a larger company rather than running his own practice, so I doubt he has any say in that type of thing. :)

Lovely shot, Nicole.

Thank you kindly, sir!

That's charming, Jerry--I love it! It was even shot with the Tamron--nice! (I do occasionally get some nice images out of mine.)

Is that a chipmunk? Er, do you have chipmunks over there?

Thanks Nicole.

Yes, I think it must be a chipmunk - but don't ask me for further details :)

We saw them during a walk in a local park - there were about half a dozen. Most of them were not very easily to be afraid and they were moving around collecting grains/nuts that had fallen to the floor without paying to much attention to us, unless we got to close. It gave a good subject for an improvised photoseries.

I had a hard time choosing this week.  I got several I like but settled on this one for the forum.  From our most recent visit to Shenandoah National Park/Skyline Drive:

That's a very nice photo, Mark. It brings back some memories.

It's been awhile (decades) so I'm sure things have changed a bit, but Skyline Drive used to be one of my all time favorite scenic roads. And part of the charm were those little hamlets that were tucked away in the valleys just off the main road.

So I've been away for a while... because mainly of this new addition to my team! He turned 1 today!

I also moved house having spent 9 months at the in-laws whilst old property sold and we searched for a place to call home. We found our home set in the countryside surrounded by trails and lakes - so I expect to fill the walls with many wonderful pictures!

...and the forums!

I know, I'm even more indecisive than usual! Sorry!

Maybe I need to take fewer dog pics...

Okay, there's no dog in this pic - but the gentleman was the judge at the dog show...

Thanks Ron.  We have lived on the "sunrise side of the Blue Ridge" for over 25 years now.  Some areas have seen lots of development and change and others appear untouched.  I'll take this as an opportunity to post another one from the same trip.  This one is looking west over the Shenandoah valley.  The town of Luray is to the right with lots of farms throughout the valley.

Not much to post this week since one camera was forgotten and the other broken...but I did get one with my cell...I took a quick photo of an oil painting my wife worked on for a couple of months with plans of hanging it in the new house...this was right after it was hung up...

IMG_3196.jpg

I intend to have more gear down there when we head that way in a week or so.  Hopefully I can get a bit of time to play with the cameras while I'm there...

I have a new appreciation for how hard it is to work in low light. But slightly out of focus is better than nothing at all.

I like that pic very much.

It is slightly soft, as you say, but only very slightly. It may seem a strange thing to say but I do think that focus is rather over-rated. Sure, if there's a choice between pin-sharp and not so sharp, I'll usually choose the latter but it is FAR more important to actually have an image - any image. I often post soft images because I believe focus is only one factor to be considered and no image is perfect.

Nice work.
