Sometime before midnight (whatever time zone you are in) this Sunday, 7 May 2017, post the best photo you have taken this week. Any subject, any style—just give us your best shot.

If you can, list your EXIF info and any special lighting setups you may have used.

P.S. Come play with us in the editing exercises (and feel free to play around in the old exercises too).

P.P.S. Peter is running a fun single lens challenge that we are all invited to participate in.

Peter, that's a beautiful image. So intriguing and romantic in tone... Were you using manual focus for that? I can't quite see how you would achieve that with autofocus.

Jerry, wow! I can see its eye! Lovely detail--how close did you have to get for that? And that bit of blue on the back of the wing is quite unexpected and attractive... When did you start shooting with the D500? Am I remembering wrong that you were a D6xx guy for awhile?

Wonderful images!

Thanks Nicole.

I am trying to catch up on the weekly challenges again, which wasn't possible for some time.

Indeed the blue colour that you can see on this capture comes from the inner - or when completely opened: upper - side of the butterfly's wings, which are all blue - but usually this sort of butterfly presses its wings together when not flying, making it less visible to predators.

These butterflies are quite large (I guess some 8 cm (wings)), so with the 60mm on a DX body I was about 40-50 cm away (the image is not cropped).

And yes, I am still using my D610 as FF, but felt that I had outgrown my old D5100 and wanted another DX sensor camerabody. Thus, in January, I added the D500. Definitely I don't regret that purchase, as for number of captures I take I see the D500 outperforming even the D610, be it for autofocussing (it has the same focus sensor as the D5, but covers a wider range of the picture) as well as for the dynamic range, not to mention its low light performance.

Nicole, it is sort-of autofocus. I focused on the nearly sharp flower and then moved away just a little bit without refocusing. I did this handheld as I didn't have the time to get the tripod and catch the last evening light. I don't think you would get quite the same effect with the 85G as it has so much less spherical aberration up close than the old D. This rendering was the determining factor when I decided which 85 to sell last year. For some reason, I just can't previsualize the capture with the 85 mm lenses. It doesn't matter if I use them on FX or DX, they just aren't as comfortable as the 105-s for me.

I am the same way...I have regularly used every 100-105 lens I have ever had, but the 85 lenses I've had stayed in the bag except on very rare occasions...

Thanks Nicole.

I am trying to catch up on the weekly challenges again, which wasn't possible for some time.

Lots of us have had a hard time keeping up lately (including me!), but I'm glad you're back! I've missed seeing what you come up with every week.

Indeed the blue colour that you can see on this capture comes from the inner - or when completely opened: upper - side of the butterfly's wings, which are all blue - but usually this sort of butterfly presses its wings together when not flying, making it less visible to predators.

So we are lucky to have this little glimpse then! Very nice!

These butterflies are quite large (I guess some 8 cm (wings)), so with the 60mm on a DX body I was about 40-50 cm away (the image is not cropped).

You were pretty close then! I was just going to ask if it was cropped--thanks for the info.

I'm glad you're enjoying that D500--I've heard great things from others who use it.

Peter, I wish you still had the 85G just so you could show a side-by-side comparison with the D. I probably need a little hand-holding to see the difference the spherical aberration makes. :)

I'm the opposite of both you and Tom--my 85mm is one of my most frequently used lenses...at least it is for portrait sessions. I'd like to try a 135 someday. But I haven't quite got the hang of my 105. I need to use it for several months' worth of the single lens challenge!

And Tom, nice to see you back here as well! Both you and Jerry have been missed!!

Thank you Nicole!  Glad to be back!

Many of you will have seen some of these images previously in a very different form.  I feel very honored that the development where we live has used some of my photos to point to some of the new neighborhoods.  We had worked out their use of some photos a few months ago and I had heard nothing.  A couple of days ago we were out wandering the neighborhood for the first time in a few weeks and we saw these new signs that they had put up with my images on them.  I just took quick phone photos - all we had at the time, but I do plan to go back and get some good images of them at some point...

I know some people will think of the prices as cheap and some will think they are expensive.  There are a WIDE variety of properties in the development including multi-acre lots for horses, etc. so please don't let these prices make you feel either way.  They have options that work for just about anyone...

Tom, that's super cool! It's always fun to see your work being used like that!

I took 500+ pics today and I haven't even looked at them all yet so picking my best isn't going to be possible before midnight! However this snap just cracks me up! Charlotte, Nippa and Weasel.DSC_7456.jpg

I just received this lens on Friday and I've shot about 600 images with it this weekend. 20 years old, cost £50. How good or bad can it be? All will be revealed in due course!

Peter, this is really beautiful.  It is as if you somehow managed to get hold of a scene, somewhere in the middle of a dream.  Very well done.  Thanks for sharing.  TT

Mark, that motorcycle shot is so well done--I love the giant, soft highlights, and I've been wondering how it was lit. I've been going back and forth between a really large softbox or scrim and the ambient light of somewhat overcast day. So, now you'll probably tell me I'm wrong on both counts, eh?

Dogbytes, great choice! I'm sure you have others you'll love, but what a fun image--great moment to capture. Is that Nippa acting the character there?

Tony, what a lovely flower! Do you know what kind it is? Nicely shot too. I'm not normally a fan of on-camera flash, but I think it worked quite well here--the hard shadows really define the individual petals and add an almost graphic quality. I also like how those hard highlights show off the shininess of the buds behind the bloom.

Nicole - I don't own any lighting equipment. It rained all day Saturday until about 6:30 - 7 pm. Then sun came out for a bit so I decided to get a few photos before it got dark. This was the first shot I took. Just natural light.
