I inherited a D7100 from my father in law and I am trying to determine shutter count. I read one time there is a way if you open an image in preview but I cannot remember what to do next?

The camerabody has an internal counter for pictures taken and saves this sequence number in the EXIF metadata that is stored with every picture.
Photo editing and visualisation software that shows the EXIF values, will therefore also allow you to view this sequence number.
Another way of finding out is to upload a (recent) photo to
Camera Shutter Count
which will read and display you the value.
