Just wanted to say THANK you guys for the add to this forum.

I little about myself as I am 44yrs old, wife and 2 boys and a father to a Angel as we lost our daughter 2yrs ago.  I live in St. Louis Missouri, Im a chemist in cancer research, we own a farm in Macon Missouri and a place down in BullShoals Arkansas  where we keep our boat.  I love boating, hunting and watching my boys play sports.  I just recently decided to get in to photography and looking to upgrade my Nikon D3000 and found this site here.

Im wanting to upgrade my camera to either a D5600 or D7200.

Im wanting to add to my lenses which consist of the kit lens and I do own a 50mm 1.4G Nikon lens.  I have already been recommended the 70-200/2.8 any other recommendations would be great as my boys play football and volleyball for their schools.

Need a recommendation for a decent photo editing software/program.  Nothing to over the top but basic stuff.

Im really wanting to jump into to this and get going as Im excited and really looking forward to the help from you guys.  Sorry in advance if I ask to many stupid question about thing as Im just here to learn.

Thanks

Shad

Welcome to the forums!

What do you need the software to do? Nikon Capture NX-D is free and can do most things that would be acceptable for magazine publication. If you want to do more, Affinity seems to work well for those that use it. Photoshop and Lightroom bundled uses a subscription model, but the cost per month isn't that high. I like Photo Mechanic as a DAM solution, but it might be overkill if you don't handle lots of files daily.

Merco, Im actually not looking to do anything but maybe add color, do black and white and maybe blur the background a little more in a pic.  Maybe later on do some more heavier stuff.  I will check into the Nikon Capture NX-D as I have never heard of it before!

Like I said Im all new to this!

I'm so sad to here about your daughter- our's was extremely ill with ulcerative colitis as a toddler, we lived at Children's hospital for months at a time. Thanks to the work done by medical researchers such as yourself: She and many of the Kids that were in Children's hospital are alive today.

I'm a Nikon shooter for 40 years now: the D7200 can use Manual Focus Ai lenses going back all of that time. Some of the greatest glass ever made is available to us on that camera. If it is between the two cameras, go where the glass is!

Sorry to hear about your daughter Brian and thank you for the kind words as I try everyday to make some sort of difference for somebody out there!

after different comments on here Im pretty sure I will go with the D7200, plus its waterproof!

Welcome aboard Shad.  I have a granddaughter living in Arnold, SW St Louis.  Beautiful country.

you may also consider the Nikon 24-70 2.8.  Superb lens.  Or the Tamron version of the same focal length.

I use Lightroom as my editing tool.  Does all I need, but, there is a monthly subscription whereas the Nikon program is free.

If you look at my contributions in the editing exercises, you will often see an intermediate step that shows the basic edits I have done in Capture NX-D. It is amazing how much can be done in this free editor when you have found where everything is hidden.
