Are there less expensive batteries that are worth buying for my d3300 or am I wasting my time? Thanks

Third-party batteries sometimes work well and sometimes not. To me the price difference isn't worth the hassle, but others think different.

This question comes up from time to time. My opinion is similar to Peter's. I believe that there are two things one should never skimp on. The first is memory cards and the second is batteries. If either of those fail, you're toast.

One thing worth mentioning when it comes to spare batteries... make sure you use them!
Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries need to have electrons flowing to reach their specified life. If you keep your spare in your bag and rarely use it, it will lose capacity surprisingly fast.
Also, these batteries do not like deep discharge/charge cycles. Unlike NiCd and NiMH batteries, they will last longer if you top them up whenever you can.
So if you avoid 'draining' them, and rotate the use of all of your batteries, the additional investment in a Nikon branded battery is worthwhile as they will be good for years.

I think one shouldn't use third party batteries. Stick with your original brand. Most of the cases third party batteries suck.

I used a 3rd party battery in my Nikon D3000 one time and it worked great for about a month. After a month of use it wouldn't hold a charge anymore.
