Is LCD screen protector a good idea?

I don't know. Both my bodies were delivered with a hard plastic snap-on screen protector, which I mounted when I got the cameras and use since then. I don't think I would bother with helicopter tape on bodies sold without protective screens.

Both of my bodies also have the OEM snap on plastic cover and I think that's a pretty good idea. I kind of wish they had stuck with that. But, I guess they save a few pennies by leaving them off of new cameras.
On the other hand, I've never been crazy about the stuff they sell as screen protectors. But, assuming you get it on properly, and it stays on in use, I guess it might be OK.

That being said, it depends how you treat your camera and where you bring it along. If it is always stored in a camerabag and you only get it out for taking the shots, then probably you can do without it. For me it happened f.i. that, while travelling with planes, the camera is stored in the handluggage. There, or while walking in nature and having the camera with me, the hard plastic cover of the D610 has got some scatches that the LCD screen would have gotten overwise.
So on my D500 I have applied a plastic film, just to ensure to be better safe than sorry.

I use them all the time. I think I take pretty good care of my camera gear, I certainly don't abuse it and, when it's not in use, it's in my bag - but I take it everywhere and it's usually around my neck. Past experience has shown that they do pick up the occasional scratch. I use a high quality protector on the screen and the small LCD info panel. If you get good ones and take care applying them they are invisible.

My D7000 did indeed come with a snap on LCD cover. And, it's saved the LCD from being scratched a couple of times.
Interesting thing about leaving them off due to the new LCD screens being touch screens. I have a hard plastic case on my iPhone that covers the entire phone... with a clear part that covers the entire face of the phone. It doesn't affect how the phone reacts to touches in the least. In fact, it's almost like it's not there at all. So, I suppose if Nikon wanted to keep using hard screen protectors, they could.

I am not saying that it can not be protected but saying it cannot be protected with the snap on hard plastics - if you look how they are fixed you will find that there is some space between the cover and the LCD screen while on your iPhone the special glass cover is firmly attached to the screen.
So, yes, Nikon could probably offer an add-on glass to fix, but why do this (other than for commercial reasons) if you could you it good from the beginning. Agree, the advantage would be for it to be replaced if scratched or dammaged.
