First a message from this week's file submitter, Malice.

This is an exposure of a water purification plant I took some time ago. I've always liked the contrast between the industrial look of the big tanks and the attempt to cheer the whole scenery up with the colorful painting on the building, but in processing this exposure, I was never quite able to come up with a look that really emphasizes this aspect. So, I'm really looking forward to your ideas.

Dropbox file:

Dropbox - Purifier.NEF - Simplify your life

And then the rules:

The exercise is weekly, a new thread with a new raw (preferably) or jpg fine file for each week.

The exercise officially runs until midnight between sunday and monday pst (UTC-8). Even after the official deadline, the exercise is still open for new interpretations.

This is a round-robin exercise, the order of submitting the week’s raw file is based on an alphabetical list of applicants’ user names. If the next submitter on the list is unable to post at his/her turn he/she may ask the thread master to be moved down the list no later than friday morning. Late applications will be added at the bottom of the list.

We will revise this when every applicant has had a go, and perhaps change this model.

The submitter for the week must make the file along with any specific text for the post available to the thread master during the weekend preceding the challenge week. The thread master will then copy the file to a Dropbox location for the challenge and make the starting post for the week.

The exercise is open to all members, not only the file submitters.

Images provided, as well as the images resulting from the exercise remain the sole property of the photographer who took them. Those participating in the editing exercise may not use or display the photo outside the exercise thread.

It is allowed to make derivative interpretations on other participants’ work (a collaborative approach). If you base your take on someone else’s work, you must indicate what you started from.

The owner of the photo comments on the work done, highlighting what he liked best (both the interpretation itself and the technique used to get there) after the original week is over.

As this exercise is a tool for learning and inspiration, multiple entries are not only ok, but encouraged if a participant gets a new idea for how to present or interpret the photo, including artistic interpretations.

Participants must share how they have achieved their take on the photo.

Participants are explicitly not limited as to what software is used for the exercise.

Would like to say "Thank You" to both Merco_61 and Adam for helping me join-in this challenge...I'm new to the website and am still getting used to the process.  If i've done anything against the rules or out of place, PLEASE, SOMEBODY let me know.  So, Malice, I love your photo just as it is.  Here's my take..., I did a slight crop off the left because to my eye, some of the objects on that side were a little distracting.  I then bumped up the colors using the HSL sliders in the Lightroom Develop module.  I turned up the luminance on virtually every color slider except purple...don't know why, but the purple took out some other colors that were more attractive than the purple.  Anyway, fun picture, thanks for sharing!  Looking forward to seeing other ideas.

Great pic Malace.  Love the colors, almost like night street art.

i performed my edits in LR5, started by cropping both the left and right sides to eliminate some distractions.  I tried to leave the street light on the right for balance, but it just didn't work for me.  I used the lens correction panel to upright the tower and storage tanks. I enhanced the colors in the color pallet while reducing some shadows.  I lightened the roadway in the foreground as I thought it added to the industrial look.  I thought a b/w version may seem dull but i like the Topaz edit version.

Thanks Malace.

A great night scene, Malice!

I tried to bring out the colours and respect the character of the night scene.

Using DxO Optics, I applied a crop, spot weighted lighting, perspective correction, contrast and vibrance.

I used the white balance tool for effect on the colours.

Which gave me this result:

I certainly wanted to have a look at this scene in b&w. Used Silver Efex.

Thanks, Malice for lending us this image to work on!

Basic edits in Capture NX-D.

ADL changed to Normal from Auto. The setting as captured is between Low and Normal, closer to Low.

Picture control changed to [LS] Landscape from [SD) Standard.

LoCA removal activated

First of all, my apologies for being so late with my reply and thank you all for the effort you put into your interpretations, which show a nice variety of ideas.

There's no interpretation I don't like!

I like the very colorful versions (despite the "available darkness") of Red83152 and deano, which are (a.) for me personally fitting in well with the season in which this picture was taken, as it was spring time then, the most colorful time here in Germany and (b.) the direction I was always had in mind for this exposure. But the topaz-Version and (especially) Bart's black and white version introduce a nice industrial touch. Whereas both of Peter's versions turn the building more into an island of light/surrounded by darkness. Very nice.

So, thanks again.

In closing, here's the result of my own processing at the time:
