Hello everyone! I just signed up to join the community.

At the still young age of 56 I am a fairly new to dslr photography starting in 2014

I am using a Nikon D5200 with AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G and AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G ED lenses. I've been interested in photography for many years but just finally and seriously ventured into it as a means to enhance my fly fishing magazine writing. Since getting started I have become progressively more excited about photography and my D5200.

It's time to turn the camera off "Auto" and start manipulating the shots. I look forward to learning all I can and meeting some photographers who share outdoor photography interests (hopefully some locally in North Texas).

After being on the road in an RV for the past 2 years my wife and I are settling in North Texas where I hope to do some more serious writing and photography. Not that magazine writing and photography isn't serious but limited word counts and editorial photo space tend to be very restricting when telling a story.

I am an avid angler using all forms of tackle but prefer fly fishing above all other forms of fishing. I also tie and design flies for myself and commercially. This is an area where I REALLY hope to be able to enhance my photographic knowledge.

Let the fun begin!

Welcome to the forums, John!

If you check out the Your best... threads in the Minichallenges subforum, you will find that most of us share the metadata and special lighting setups together with the photos. That can be quite educational.

With a main focus on fly fishing and flies, you will probably be looking for a macro lens soon. You can get quite close with the kit zooms, but the results you can achieve with a dedicated macro lens are very much better.
