I've just bought an old Eos 300D body for lens tests, and I've run into an odd little problem - when I plug it into the computer it's recognised and I can access the files through the operating system, but for some reason ViewNX 2 doesn't want to transfer files from it, which seems a bit odd since it works fine with my D50 and Fuji bridge camera. I've had to transfer files from the camera to the desktop then shove them into ViewNX which is a minor nuisance, and delete them from the camera manually.

Is this a known incompatibility, or am I doing something wrong?

Do you shoot in raw with the Canon? I think Transfer NX can only handle three formats... Nef, jpg and tif. It might even read the camera descriptor in a jpg and not work with cameras on the blacklist. Another idea is that the transfer mode in the camera doesn't match what Transfer NX expects.

It's using jpg and the "Print/PTP" USB connection - there are no drivers for Windows 7 and the alternative connection. That may be the problem, though I think my D50 is also using PTP - not at home right now so I can't check. But as it turns out this "problem" is actually turning out to be useful! Since the canon doesn't use Nikon's file naming conventions I can download all of the Nikon pictures from a session normally, copy the Canon pictures to a directory or the desktop, then shove them into ViewNX so that all of the pictures are in the same view. So for example yesterday I took photos _of_ five lenses with the Nikon, but took the test shots _with_ the lenses using the Canon. When I put the eBay listings together I can download both with the same file name sequence. It may sound trivial, but it's actually very handy.

A very belated update on this - it looks like the problem is something to do with the USB 1.1 connection - when I take the card out of the camera and put it in a card reader everything works perfectly. I really have no idea why it took me more than three months to think of this!
