The December 2016 "supermoon", Nikon D50 and a cheapo T-mount 500mm f8 lens (not a mirror lens, it's really 500mm long!) Hand held at 1/250th F16, a VERY clear night in London for a change. I've cropped it and upped the contrast a little, otherwise unedited.

I've used those el-cheapo T-Mount long lenses- the 400/6.3 "Tele-Astranar", bought when I was 14. Used it for many High-School games, got several into the yearbooks.

They do a good job, amazingly light.

Mine is a Dufay, which seems to be the same as numerous other brands, there's presumably a factory somewhere that makes them for anyone who wants to put their own label on them. Review here

It's certainly better than the cheaper 500mm mirror lenses. Not as convenient, but I'd sooner have a lens that actually works properly.

In defence of the mirror lenses, I had a Tamron SP 500/f8, that I bought second-hand in 1997, for my FM2n. Maybe I had a good example but there really was nothing to complain about with it. I even used it on my Micro Four Thirds system - with an effective focal length of 1000mm. Even on my Benbo Mk1 tripod with a Gitzo head I could hardly keep it still! Anyway, I sold it but I wish I'd kept it, I reckon it would be great on the D610.

I'm also a fan of CAT lenses. I had a 500mm f/8 for my Minolta that was a razor. Oh sure... working with a single aperture can be a pain and focusing was tricky sometimes but the results were gorgeous. I still have it somewhere and I've given thought to buying an adapter to use it with my Nikons. However one of the mirrors shows signs of slivering so it might not be worth the trouble.

I agree entirely - I got to play with a Solid CAT lens in my Canon days when I was working part time for a camera shop and it was brilliant - unfortunately I bought my Canon F1 for less than the lens cost, I simply couldn't afford to buy one. But I've also tried cheap mirror lenses and have NOT been impressed.

You should stack such pictures especially when using 'el cheapo', you can get amazing results!

Next time I will try stacking myself, this is my best handheld of the moon without stacking

This is my best. A few years ago using an Olympus E-M5 with a Tamron SP 500/8 (effective focal length 1000mm) from a tripod...

Unfortunately I've lost the original file - probably on some long-forgotten hard drive somewhere.
