The camera seems to function normally except I will not fire the shutter. There is no "Err" on the top screen. Pressing the AE/AF button does nothing.
Does anyone know for sure if this is a shutter or motherboard issue?

Obvious stupid question - is the memory card OK? The battery? Has the SD card been write protected?
Something like this, my first thought would be to switch off, take both out, check that the write protect switch isn't on, and put them back in again. If possible check with another SD card.
If all else fails maybe do a complete reset, but that's a bit of a last resort option - Factory reset on a D50?: Nikon DX SLR (D40-D90, D3000-D7500) Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review
Also, what size is the memory card? If it's over 2gb it won't work, of course.
