Ok so, clickbait title, yeah.. but honestly it isn't doing what it should..

I have a D5000 and I do live concert photography but when I go to use the viewfinder (I use manual focus) it LOOKS sharp and focused but I take the photo it's blurry as heck, but I notice when I move the manual wheel around it kinda has this little focus zone where it is focused but it shouldn't be because it has a fair bit of play

this doesn't absolutely bother me since when I use the live screen view and manual focus and it LOOKS focused it IS focused. So I don't know what is up with my viewfinder.. what can I/should I do? Am I missing something obvious? I usually shoot in these parameters

Aperture of f stop 1.8

ISO 1600-2500

50mm prime lens

auto lighting mode

What is a typical shutter speed? If you are shooting handheld, there might be some camera shake.

I knew I was forgetting something lol it is usually 1/90.

It isn't camera shake cause a it doesn't look like a motion blur, it looks like it's out of focus, 2 different things. Also if it was camera shake, using the live screen view wouldn't really change much

Do the lines on the focusing screen look sharp? If not, you might need to adjust the diopter on the finder. If they look sharp but the photos are front- or back focused, your focusing screen isn't seated correctly. You might also have a mirror that is out of alignment.

The finder in the D5xxx series isn't optimal for manual focus as it is too bright and doesn't have the contrast of the more expensive bodies.

my d40 manual focuses through the viewfinder 100x better.

If it isn't a simple diopter adjustment, it is time to get it serviced.
