Those texture closeups are what the 55/3.5 do best. It is far from ideal for product shots as it is a bit too contrasty. It was originally developed for repro work and not for pictorial photography, so the focus was on a flat field, low distortion and high contrast rather than a pleasant rendering. As an allround short macro lens, the 40 on DX and the current 60 on FX are much easier to use. It has surprisingly little CA, but that can be because it is a slow lens so it doesn't show so much.
