I don't know of any groups, unfortunately.    But for bird photography, just about any place is good depending on what kind of birds you want to photograph.  (I was going to say "shoot", but I opted for "photograph" instead, well, because.   ).    We are in such a big state with so many different geographic settings that there are huge varieties of different birds.

I live in the city, and I took this shot standing in my driveway.  This little predator was sitting in the top of the tree in my front yard.  It is a grey shouldered kite (aka California Kite).

Just where I live (Texas Panhandle), we have bluejays, cardinals, finches, mockingbirds, red tail hawks, swallows, mud thrushes, and so many more that I can't even name them all.  What area do you currently reside?

Have you tried contacting the Audubon society? I think they have a local chapter in Dallas.

What Peter said.

Birds are everywhere. They have the airial advantage which makes it pretty easy for them to live anywhere they want. I get hawks and owls and sometimes eagles and osprey in my neighborhood. I've even seen them sitting on my backyard fence. There are some horned owls that perch on my next door neighbors roof, on top of the chimney, at night.

You can start in your own back yard. I know a lot of people who shoot birds from their porches or lawn chairs. You might be surprised at the number of different birds that visit your yard over the course of the day. You have to be patient though.

And, of course when I say "be patient" I mean just that. When you're hunting, the main rule is to let the prey come to you. It's the same with photography.
