I recently purchased D750 and also a first time user of Nikon. I am really struggling to use the body with all the settings.

My recent two key challenges has been -

1. AFOCUS not making the beep sound or have any green indicator in the view finder hence i am failing to figure out if i have locked focus correctly.

2. While i shoot in "Manual" mode - the camera changes either the aperture or shutter speed by itself when i choose an ISO.

Please note i am using the body with Nikon 85mm prime, f1.4 and my auto focus button is at the back and not the shutter.

Also if the answers is there in the manual, Kindly refer me to the page. I have read Autofocus section multiple times.

1. Are you in AF-S mode?  It won't work (beep) if you are in AF-C mode.

2. When you say "Manual" mode, you are referring to the setting that puts the "M" in upper left hand corner of the display on top of the camera, the one that allows you to set the aperture, shutter speed, etc. yourself.  There is a focus mode switch on the lens that allows you to switch between the modes on the lens, but there is also a setting on the camera that actually controls the camera's operation.  (Not meaning to insult your intelligence, I am just trying to be comprehensive in my answer without knowing how familiar you are with your new camera).  But if the "M" is in the upper left hand corner of the display on top of the camera, it should not be behaving in the manner that you describe (unless there is some other setting somewhere that I am unaware of that will override your manual settings.  And that is entirely possible that I am unaware of such a setting possibility).

Are you running the latest firmware version? If not, I'd recommend downloading the latest version and installing it, then see if the setting issues persist.

Thanks Thumper.

For Point 1 - Yes i am in AF- C hence what you said make sense. I read about it in the manual too however then how do i know that i have locked on correctly. Is there no way to get a confirmation - may be something like release lock.

For  Point 2 - By manual mode i meant - The "M" on the dial which has other settings like "A", "S" and "P". I will be trying the firmware check tonite - Lets see if that fix it. I am not sure why i feel it has something to do with some settings which i am missing out.

On the D750, there should be an AF button that you press and hold, then rotate one of the command wheels to change the AF mode.  It should show on the display in the lower left hand side.  (Not in the absolute lower left hand corner, but close to it).

Are you sure you haven't activated bracketing by mistake? That is the only thing I know of that lets the camera change aperture or exposure time in M mode without input from the user.

With AF-C, you are per default in release priority. You can change that to focus priority with  custom setting a1. I am not sure how that will work for you, but it might be worth a try. The trouble is that it will lock the shutter release unless you have focus confirmation.

I googled Nikon D750 display, and I found this pic.  You can see the AF-S icon. That should be where the selected focus mode is displayed.

There is a focus indicator in the view finder that will show when the focus locks on. Page 36 in the manual.

Thumper thanks - I know how to change the AF - C to AF - S and it beeps on AF - S but not on AF - C so as you said may be it is designed to be like that.

Merco - Excellent point on the bracketing and you really made my day. Yes that was the issue and i changed it and it works fine now and my AF - C confirmation has been resolved by Pebble.

Pebble - Great one. It does show up if it is locked.

Awesome guys!!

Yeah no beeps in AF-C because it would be constantly beeping, and that would be even more annoying.
