Hello, today I was playing with my D750 and a Nikon 70-300 (f/4.5-5.6 VR AF-s IF-ED) with is made for FX format and I realized it can zoom in a lot more than my 28-300 which is also made for FX format. Can someone explain why is that? Why can I get closer to objects at 300mm with the 70-300??

thank you very much!

What you're seeing is called focus breathing; that some zooms actually zoom out when focusing closely.

It has to do with the optical design of the lens, and the 28-300 is far more affected by this than the 70-300.

I will add to Scott's excellent post that they are both 300 mm, as the focal length is measured at infinity focus
