First Photo taken with the Sigma 50-500mm at Full Zoom.

The 2nd Photo taken with the Sigma 50-500mm with Kenko Pro 300 2x Teleconverter at Full Zoom. Neither image has been edited (for the sake of accurate comparison). I did have to go Manual focus when I had the teleconverter on this lens. Though that may have been my Camera as it has since jacked up. (I also had to shrink the image as it was over 10meg).

As far as i can judge i think the loss minimal if any at all, background blurring seems to be more washed which in my opinion greatly emphasizes the focus of the subject than everything else in the scene.

Correct me if im wrong but in comparison to say an extension tube the depth of field should be greater with the teleconverter attached?

As far as focusing is concerned at this distance it gives you a bit more flexibility on what you want to focus on your subject rather than auto focusing possibly focusing on part of the subject is not wanted

The only sensible way to compare is to look at the DOF for one focal length at one distance (simulating the TC) and half the focal length at half the distance (simulating the tubes) to get the same subject size. I did it using DOFmaster for a 600mm at 10ft, f/16, and 300mm at 5ft, f/16. The result was identical, about half an inch DOF.

Thanks for the heads up on this one guys! I have been looking about getting a TC, I'm really into my wildlife so it would be great for me to get closer to the action but I don't wont to comprise distance for quality. But seeing those test shots from Rocknrumble there's nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of PP! I will see if I can hire one for a while and see what happens. :)

IMO they're so cheap they're worth having in your kit.

The Nikon TCs at about $500 each aren't exactly cheap IMHO, but not too expensive and after shooting my new TC14E on Saturday, I'd have to agree it is worth having one in the bag if you can.  Bright sunny day at a Lacrosse tournament on Saturday and before the first game, I took two photos in a row of one of the lacrosse goals with and without the TC on my 70-200 f/2.8 and cropped to about the same size so you could check the details easier:

TL TC14E 6647
TL TC14E 6651

Also included an action shot where I used the TC.  Photo details of each of the photos are in descriptions in the album.

TL TC14E 7823

I was very happy with the results. Edit:  Forgot to add that the first image above is without the TC...

But they won't fit the lenses the OP was asking about.

Get the best one you can afford! as previous posts say its a great addition to the bag, just remember it may not be compatible with every lens in the kit and it is usually a much cheaper way than buying a longer focal length

I agree Warrick...I checked the compatability prior to purchase and confirmed that it would work with my current lenses, but also with all the others I thought I might eventually purchase and want to use it with.  Luckily it will work with all of them with the exception of my 24-70, but since I have the 70-200, I wouldn't use it with that lens anyway.

Nikon TCs will only fit a small subset of the available Nikkor lenses. Look on Nikon's website to see what fits what, I'm getting fed up of repeating it.. Sigma seem to be a bit fussy about what lenses/TCs work together, but I'm not sure if they have any physical locking system like Nikon.

Buy the best you can afford, but make sure that what you buy will work with your longest lens.

There's one for sale in the classified section here. It's a good one, a Tamron, barely used.

No problems. I'll most likely continue adding shots. :)

Hmmm... Tamron, if I hadn't just bought one I'd probably be snapping that one up.

I had fun shooting with it. Was a little difficult with moving animals as I had to manual focus. Here's a better one of a chimp...
