Hey all!

Just wondering which Nikon DSLR is best for recording HD video and for a long periods of time?

I want to get into videography, and wasn't sure which DSLR is best. (for future investment)

Does all the DSLR's have recording time limits? Because I know my D5100 is stuck to only being able to record 30mins worth, which kinda sucks.

Thanks for your help!

The D7100 is currently Nikon's best HDSLR (unless you want to step it up to the D800, which does raw video).  Most cameras have a recording limit due to SD filesystem limitations (each file can only be up to 4Gb).  Some cameras automatically continue recording to a second file, but I don't believe Nikons do that, yet.

I have also recorded video using the D7100 but found a problem downloading it. This was when I first received the camera and did the usual trick of not reading the manual and just playing with the equipment. I have inserted two memory cards in the camera and hoping that you can set it up to have one for stills and the other for video.

I would think the D7200 would have to be coming out soon. Personally, I'm loving my D3200 for video (the main reason I bought it actually). I use 720/50fps at the moment as I like the ultra smooth playback. I would imagine the 5xxx and 7xxx series would do 1080p at that speed or higher but, for what I'm going to use it for (recording me playing bass and giving recorded tutorials) the 720p can't be beat. The fact that it's a handy little snapper has been a very pleasant bonus (and huge distraction lol).

D3200 works great I've gotten some amazing footage but for practical reasons I invested in a GoPro hero 3+. No regrets

Planning a trip to Normandy for the D-Day 70th commemoration next year and would like to shoot video and stills to document the travels and performances with my chorus -- The Alexandria Harmonizers.

What microphone setup should I look at to use with my D7100?

If you install this UNOFFICIAL firmware you can get a longer recording time with your D5100, It will keep going untill you reach 4GB

How is the D5100?  What are its limitations?  I own one and want to start shooting video, but keep thinking I need a Canon or a better camera.  What do you think?

You don't need a canon, if i'm not mistaken the only advantage of the canon is a higher bitrate, but unless you are making something for the big screen you wont notice much difference.

I use a D7000 for video and i think the D5100 has the same sensor.

Just watch some of the tutorials on youtube that tell you how to shoot video with your D5100

Like this one for example http://www.youtube.c...h?v=4QvXTwRCpeY

Thanks I've seen this video it's pretty cool.  Here is some of the limitations of D5100 from what I know

1. You can't adjust shutter speed or ISO while shooting video

2. There is no software comparable to Magic Lantern for Canon post video editing which is amazing from what I've seen.

I almost only exclusively see the high quality dramatic videos from Canon users.  If you know any links to great vids with D5100 or D7000 let me know.

Thanks!

The hacked firmware i shared earlier just updated and it now it allows for Live view manual control iso/shutter on the d5100
