Hello,

This is the first time I am using this forum so I don't know if this is how you ask a question.  I was using my D4s with the Nikon 70-200 2.8.  I have the setting on Manual.  My focus button is on the AF-ON, the shoot button is just that to shoot not to focus.  We were in a middle of a shoot and the camera decided not to fire.  was not using a flash.  it happened ones or twice than it worked.  Then about 5-10 minutes later, I tried a few times and it would not fire.  I shot the camera down for a while and then it seemed to fire.  I am just concerned on why it did it without an explanation for future shoots.  Has anyone experienced that?

This section is for questions about the site, not for troubleshooting. However, what focus mode were you in, Single-shot or Continuous? In Single-shot, the camera is in focus priority as standard and won't focus unless it can detect focus. I think there is a menu setting to switch between focus priority and release priority.

Yes...In continuous, I believe the default is focus then release as well unless you have changed it...been awhile since I set mine....

If you are using the "1st Gen" 70-200mm f/2.8 VR (as opposed to the VR II model), then you might have one that is getting stuck.   I have a 1st Gen 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, and mine suddenly stopped auto-focusing.  I figured out that it would get stuck when at one end of the focusing range.  When it is attempting to focus, it would go to one end of its range, then try to go back the other way, but it would get stuck when it would hit the stop on the end of the range.  Then it just would not focus in the other direction unless I reached up and moved the focus ring manually, thus "unsticking" it from its trapped position.  Then it would auto-focus just fine for a few shots, but if it hit that stop at the end of the range, it would stick again.  I am probably going to have to send it in to a Nikon service center to have it cleaned and serviced if I want it to return to normal functionality.

The focus works fine. It's when I try and use the fire button I get no response. What is weird is it will work for a while and then just won't fire. Very weird. I even sent it to Nikon for service, got it back and in my first portrait shoot, after some photos, it did the same thing again.

What are your settings in the a bank of custom settings? If you write them down and share them, we can possibly see if there is something strange going on.
