* first post *

Hello all,

Hoping someone can please check my maths on this.

I'm new to guide numbers but not new to photography. But my only experience using my SB700 is about 4 years ago, I did some kitchen tabletop splashtography with my Camera Axe. B)

So, now I'm hoping to do something a bit more outdoorsy and photograph a waterfall and gorge near my house at night.

The subject distance is about 150 meters, and I'll be using F8.

So, (if I understand this correctly) GN = 150 x 8

or 1200m @ ISO 100.

Is this correct? Is there a flash available that has a GN this high?

Thank you.

This project is doable, if youy have nearly unlimited funds and access to a stadium light rig to mount about 20 1200J studio strobes. You will have to rethink and shoot in available light, perhaps with some lightpainting thrown in.

Yep... Light painting is your best bet here.

I agree with the suggestions from Merco_61 and dcbear78. You can check Coast flashlights. I bought HP7 a few years ago and it has a beam distance of 226 meters and I think it can be used in you case.

Thank you everyone for your great suggestions. Was I correct in that calculation?

If it's light painting required, I could use my torch:

A friend of mine photographed about a quarter of an aircraft carrier deck. He used several GREAT BIG old fashioned flash bulbs.
