Nikon D70 body with the seriously maligned AFNikkor 35~80mm f/4~5.6D Lens.

 

1/50s, f/5.6, ISO 200, focal length@ 80mm, no flash and used Multi-Segment Metering Mode.

Where has it been maligned? I have never read anything else than that it is optically surprisingly good for the price point it sold at but that the feel is awful. I can't disagree with that.

As long as you don't try to use it close to the mfd, where it loses quite a lot of contrast it is a nice lens that draws in a way that is easily recognisable and different from most Nikkors.

There were "at least?" two versions of this lens, I like the original which had the same styling as the 35~70/3.3 AF-Nikkor. "I seem to recall" that the 35~80 was Nikon's first very low-cost lens with an aspherical surface. Mine was made in Japan, was an early one.

The first one, with the rubberized focus ring was a 6 elements in 6 groups lens that was much nicer to use than the later but with more vignetting and softer corners than the newer. The later version has 8 elements in 7 groups. They both draw similar to each other and nothing else in the Nikon lineup because of the moulded aspherical element.
