Welcome to the first official NikonForums.com photo contest!

To start, we'll keep things simple.  The theme for this month is "landscape" and photos taken with any Nikon will quality for the contest.

Prizes:

  • 1st place prize: $100 B&H gift card
  • 2nd place prize: 1-year premium forum account
  • 3rd place: honorable mention and homepage feature

Here's how to enter:

  1. Go to the gallery category for this contest by clicking here
  2. Click on the "upload" button on the right side of the page
  3. Click on "browse" and select the file you'd like to upload from your computer (don't change the category or create a personal album)
  4. Click on "upload"
  5. Click on "review & publish"
  6. Add a title, description, and tags for your photo, then click on "finish & publish"

Your photo will then appear in the gallery index.  Submission deadline: October 31, 2013

How will the winners be chosen?

Entries will be accepted through the end of the month.  At that time, the contest gallery will close and a new theme will be posted for November.  For two weeks you will be able to rate and comment on the photos in the gallery.  Then, the top 5 photos will become finalists and we'll post a poll in this forum to determine the two winners.  The poll will remain open for a week, meaning that we'll know who the winners are around November 21st.

If you win first place, your B&H gift card will be sent to you via PM/e-mail.  If you're in second place, we'll automatically upgrade your forum account so that you can upload even more pics to the site!  Good luck!

Fine print

There really isn't much to say here, except by entering you agree to allow NikonForums.com to share links to your work via social media channels and publish your work on our homepage if you end up winning.  Note that in order to qualify for this photo contest, your entry must be taken with a Nikon camera.

Limit 1 submission per person.  If you submit multiple photos, you will have until the end of the month to delete all but your final submission.  At the end of the month, if you still have multiple submissions, they will be disqualified and removed from the contest gallery.

Once again, good luck and I hope you enjor our first official photo contest!  Please post any question in this thread.

I just had a look at photos already uploaded for this competition and I see that some have copyright marks and some don't. I would prefer to have my uploads copyright marked - is this in order?

Regards

For those who haven't entered yet: the gallery will be closing in about 18 hours.  Then we'll post next month's theme and start voting for our Landscape winners!

Is there an easy way to see each picture large, without going back to the thumbnails after every one? I'll get bored before I see all the pics, never mind choosing a winner :)

Yes, there are previous and next arrows in the gallery once you open up a photo.

Not that I can see, and I'm not noted for being unobservant. If I click an image to see it large, I can click it again to send it away, but that's about all I can do.

Indeed, I don't think the lightbox has a scrolling feature (which isn't good, I'll admit).

But, you can use the filmstrip at the bottom of this page to move through the gallery relatively quickly:

Edit: I just figured out a better way!  Either go to this link & scroll down:

Or click on the slideshow link at the top of the page.

I'm very confused on how to rate these photos for the contest. Maybe it's just not working on an ipad, but I can't vote or click anything when they are all on screen until I click each photo individually.

I'd much prefer to see the winner chosen by a judge, the Editor of this website or a committee, by asking members to vote on photos submitted by themselves and other members could turn voting into yet another social media popularity contest where people post links to all their friends begging them to sign up and vote for their photo, I've had lots of such requests from my Facebook "friends" in the past.

I have a photo entered but haven't told any of my friends and you can't expect me to vote for anyone else's photo now can you?.

Think you could be right Geoff or alternatively entrants only picking there top five , obviously not being able to rate your own .

After the top 5 are chosen based on ratings & comments, there will be a poll where members can only vote for a single winner.  This model prevent social popularity contests and people aren't going to sign up just to vote- at least that's now it's been on my other sites.

BUT if this ends up not working, then we will of course switch to a staff judging model after the finalists are nominated by out members.

Could you please change the number of views a photo has had to show the number of "unique views" only.

I've noticed that every time I view my own photo the counter goes up one so I don't open mine up any more, I just look at the thumbnail to see how it's doing but if I had the time or inclination I could make my view total rocket giving others the impression that loads of people are viewing it and therefore possibly attract more votes.

I still think that having the people who have themselves entered photos in these competitions to pick the winners is a bit like leaving a bunch of children in charge of a candy store :)

Geoff.

We'll see how things work out this time around, and if changes are warranted, they'll definitely be made!

Voting is now live:

Contest #1 Voting (Landscape) - Official Contests and Events - NikonForums.com

The top 15 were hand-picked due to a low number of ratings in the gallery.
