Hi lads,

You are my go-to as for knowledge related to camera.

I got NIKON D800E, and needless to say, the RAW files are fairly huge - and honestly, in future, I want even higher Mp sensor.

We all know that sorting pictures, and working with them, can be slown down a bit by the PC... A couple of weeks ago, I put an order in a store - an order I expected to be cancelled, however, its gone through it seems...

Samsung MZHPV256HDGL, a M.2 unit running 2150MB/s read 1200MB/s write, 90/70K random, would this be ideal? It will not (cannot) be used as boot device, so I was thinking just to use it for sorting pictures, and perhaps even have lightroom as well as photoshop stored.

Does my idea make sense, or is there any way of getting more speed pinned down for working with pictures?

Cheers,

Marc

PS: Couldnt figure which section to put the thread in, hope you can advice me for future^^.

The best thing I ever did was get my MacBook with an SSD (Solid State Disk - think of it as a 512GB card if you aren't familiar).  Of course, it is the only internal device on my laptop, so it is the boot device, software installed location and a storage disk.  I dump all my images to the SSD and edit them all on the SSD.  I have a variety of external disks that I use for backups and for long term storage so the images generally get moved after they have been processed.  The final images that I post typically stay on the SSD longer so I have quicker access to them (stored in a different folder structure than the RAW or JPG images).  I do have a few folders on the SSD for long term photo storage for my favorite images, but there aren't too many of them per year and they've already been exported from LR as JPGs so they don't take up too much space.  Copying too the SSD from card is very fast and processing is definitely faster from the SSD than a hard drive, but I would say that for processing, CPU and Memory are more critical than disk speed although the disk speed helps!

Hope that helps!

Why do you say that it can't be used as a boot device?

Most SSD's are designed to be used as boot devices. If you can put your OS and applications on the SSD you will see a significant improvement in overall performance.

Yes, most.
I got a 480 GB Agility 3 SATA SSD as boot drive.

The NGFF M.2 disk by Samsung, cannot operate as boot drive, cannot remember why, but sadly google confirms so - but.... If the sorting is done from the device, and the programs run from this unit, it should perform around 4 times as fast as most SATA SSDs.

Using SSD in all computers without exception.

That's really strange because I googled the part number you posted and from what I read, it should be bootable. I guess not.

Photoshop will always work at it's best if it has three physical discs available. Run the software on the system disc, use a large disc as storage and have the fastest M.2 SSD you can get as a scratch disk.

Marc, is it the SSD that isn't bootable or is it the fact that most motherboards don't support M.2 drives in the boot order table yet?

Strictly Z170 and X99 boards that support it, it seems - I'll save those ~4500 DKK for now, but might be worth later.

Figured out the 'riddle'

There are 2 versions of the SSD

1) AHCI 2150/1250MB/s 90K IOPS

2) NVMe 2150/1250MB/s 300K IOPS

Second version, will not work.... Fortunately for me, it is AHCI version that I bought - should work just fine then, hurra!

Bringing up this old thread.
I ended up doing two things...

1) Close some of the options in the 'crappy software'

2) Bought a Samsung 960 Evo, 3200/1500MB/s

It does speed up the process lots, easier to scroll between pictures, however, the VIewNX isnt exactly snappy.
