Hi,

I got a good deal on the mentioned lens and have to say that I am very pleased with the build and image quality of it. I'm using it on a D7100 body and the resolution holds up to the sensor very well.

I've only had it for a couple of days, but initial testing shows promising results. Of course, initial subjects being local cats :) It's lighter and smaller from the DA*300 I'm used to from Pentax, but it doesn't have a motor so that might account for some of the weight and size loss. It's handholdable with sufficient shutter speeds. The AF is slower than an AF-S version of course but gets the job done.

Does anyone know if there will be a new version of this lens soon?  I have heard rumours of a VR upgrade coming this fall -- but it is already fall!

I'm hanging out for the new version and thought it was very close to release as suggested by the Nikon Rumors website. But the Nikon Df camera was announced instead. A very frustrating wait but maybe it will be way too expensive anyway.

Yeah, me too.  Nikon Rumors suggested it would be out in the fall, so hopefully we will hear something soon.

I have shot tens of thousands of photos with the lens in the subject line of this thread.

IMHO, there is little to no reason for VR.  Would VR be nice?  Sure, but certainly not needed.  My keeper ratio is very high - very few are tossed because of bluriness due to shutter duration.

Also, there is not a bad 300mm f/4 lens.  At least I have never seen one and have used perhaps clse to 3 dozen examples of this lens.

The 300mm f/4 lens is a fantastic BIF lens because of its hand-holdability and light weight.

Just spring loose $600-$800 and buy one and start shooting.

Any word on an update of this lens? VR is important for me because of a tremor. I really want to play with it!

PC, I understand there is a Nikon presser next week.  It is rumored there will be announcements for more than one item.  Some rumors point to the strongly desired VR version of the 300mm, f/4 lens.  Stay tuned.

Furthermore, Thom Hogan recently stated (I am paraphrasing) that he believes Nikon is close to a rollout of the lens.

I hope for your sake, with your condition it appears soon.  Peace.

Still waiting!  It's getting tempting to just go for the "old" version.

And don't you just know that if you go ahead a new lens will appear two weeks later!?!

I just got the af version a few days ago and impressed with it thus far. Here are a few backyard bird pics from just giving it a test run.

For me the absence of vr doesn't bother me at all. It's definitely a good lens for the price.
