Hello I am new on this forum and quite new to photography in general.

One year ago I bought a Nikon D610 with 2 FX lenses: Nikon AF-S 24-70/2.8G ED and Nikon AF-S 70-200/2.8G ED VRII.

What I normally use when I go around taking pictures is of course the Nikon AF-S 24-70/2.8G ED.

I would like to buy a more compact lens to be able to use when traveling light and not needing to take pro photos. The Nikon AF-S 24-70/2.8G ED is too heavy (about 1kg) and sometimes it is not very practical to carry around. I still want it to be a good FX lens with a decent aperture.

I am looking at these two lenses:

AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF (3.5x)

I am more towards the second one.

Any suggestion/recommendation?

Thank you, Giovanna

Think about how you will use the lens. What is more important for that use? 1/3 to 2/3 steps faster wide open, where neither lens is quite sharp or stabilization? They both draw similar, with similar uncorrected aberrations. The VR version is ~60 g lighter as well. I would go for the VR lens in your situation.

Thank you Peter.

As I said, I have very good lenses already. What I am looking for is something "light" to use when I travel which can still take some decent pictures. If you have any other suggestions besides the ones I mentioned, they are very welcome.

Another lens to consider for walkaround use when the 24-70 is too heavy or visible is the Tamron 28-75/2.8. 510g with the hood and only 67 mm filter size. It is quite nice stopped down to f/3.5.

As I said before, the VR has VR and is lighter than the older lens. The lack of the annoying sound from the mechanical drive is a plus as well.
