This is one of a series of pictures taken for a photo competition (American Crew, Face Off, Hair Style).

We had great fun shooting these and I learned how to use my speedlight and reflectors on the job.

This was taken with my D3100 and 50mm lens.

Hi. Interesting photo. Can you tell a few words about light on this photo?

Im on a budget (owing to a new baby), so don't have much kit or money to spend on lighting. The white background is an old second hand white movie projector screen, set up in the barber shop. I had 2 white reflectors, one set up at the back of the model and one just offset in front of the camera. I only have one speedlight so had this attached to the 3100. I was shooting with the shop lights turned off. I was also using a 50mm lens (75mm; equivalent on the 3100).

I would love to get dome soft box lights but new baby comes first.

So one reflector was directed on the model's back, and the second on model's face? And where was directed speedlight? Upward, on the model or somewhere else?

Sorry, forgot to mention,

Yes, the speedlight was pointed straight up as this good gave bounce off the white ceiling.. I also tried a few other angles for this but it didnt give the same soft light effect. I found that having the model move towards the camera prevented any shadow effects on the background screen.
