Sometime before midnight (whatever time zone you are in) this Sunday, 17 July 2016, post the best photo you have taken this week. Any subject, any style--just give us your best shot.

If you can, list your EXIF info and any special lighting setups you may have used.

P.S. Come play with us in the editing exercise. The editing exercise is taking a break for the summer, but everyone is welcome to go into old editing exercises and play around.

P.P.S. Also check out the new music inspiration challenge--we have until the end of the month to submit an image for the challenge.

Since I'm not sure, I will have another shot at taking pictures this week, I'm going to start with a snapshot I took today, just in case.

Not too snapshotty! Nicely lit and well composed doesn't exactly scream snapshot.

The alien pilots are getting sloppy, not at all the crisp formation I photographed on June 27 last year.

Heh--I remembered your earlier UFO shot, but I had to go look it up to remind myself what the UFOs actually were. That's good for a giggle!

Thanks.

It felt kind of snapshotty to me, because I was on my way from A to B in a hurry and coincidently had my camera with me, when I came across these flowers. So, I just stopped to quickly take a few shots and hurry on. Or in other words, I've been a bit lucky in that situation. ;-)

Could it be that seeing the light and composing is starting to come naturally as you start taking your photos with more thought behind them than before? As you progress, the picture-taking process will take less thought and be more instinctive for every good photo you take.

Quitting time and just right for a pick me up.  Pina Colada, please.  :))

This is one of my wife's landscaping artifacts and I thought it would be fun to see how the Nikon D70 would handle all the colors.  Not too bad.

Nikon D70 with AFNikkor 70~210mm,  1/50s, I believe the aperture setting was between f/8~f/11.  ISO@ 200.  No flash, and metering was CWA.  Not all of the EXIF Data came through for some reason.

Thanks for viewing.

Thank you very much for the encouraging thoughts.

As much as I wish what you're saying to be true, I'm pretty sure that in this case it's simply been dumb luck. ;-)

I'm not saying, I'm not trying, though. Nevertheless I often end up with captures, where I think "why the (whatever) didn't I pay more attention to...", followed by depth of focus, background, shadows, composition or whatever can be done wrong.

I know a few things from books and tutorials about photographic rules, but I really have a hard time heeding them all together at the same time, when taking pictures.

Obviously, I need to practice more so that I don't have to think about these things all the time. At this point I'm glad, I'm practicing/taking more pictures at all. I've been mostly inactive for the last two or three years and I realize that's not helpful, when you want to improve your results (just stating the obvious here).

It was my annual week at the Royal International Air Tattoo last week. The weather wasn't particularly great for photography, too much grey sky, but I got a couple of decent shots.

I'm jumping in early this week for a change...My wife asked me to see if I could grab some butterfly shots of a couple of butterflies that have been visiting our garden...I took some yesterday with my D4 and 70-200...got some good shots but I wasn't wild about them - really wanted the 105, but had to grab and go when she saw that it had shown up...Here's one from yesterday...

Butterfly-3763.jpg

D4, 70-200 @ 190mm, f2.8, 1/2000, ISO 400

Today she called me with a different butterfly and this time I grabbed the Nikon 1...

Butterfly-5096.jpg

Nikon 1 V3, 10-100 @ 100mm, f5.6, 1/500, ISO 400

My wife is learning to use the Nikon 1 and I was showing her how to change some of the settings when the new pup came running across the lawn towards us...Of course, I had just set it on Program mode, but it worked out OK...I got a few good ones as he came towards us, but this was my favorite...

Tucker-5113.jpg

Nikon 1 V3, 10-100 @ 100mm, f5.6, 1/640, ISO 400

After that, the dogs settled down, I finished up the quick lesson, got the camera back to Manual and was able to capture my favorite shot of the day...

Tucker-5134.jpg

Nikon 1 V3, 10-100 @ 67.6mm, f5.6, 1/800, ISO 400

And yes, his right eye is blue and his left eye is brown...Now we have lots of thunderstorms rolling through so we're all just chilling in the house...

Quick edit...in case you are wondering, I used the Radial Filter tool to block out the info on the tag which was readable...

Me and my wife went on a 10km walk along a high escarpment today.  Two suspension bridges crossed and I liked the shadows of one of the bridges and us on it.

I haven't been shooting for a while as the temperature window is fairly short here in southern Arizona this time of year.  The camera does get quite warm after being in the sun after 30 minutes.  I think repeated use in this climate may be detrimental to the longevity of the camera, not to mention the operator.

I shot these boats at a boat dock at Canyon Lake up in the foothills above Apache Junction.  The sun was so bright that the colors were muted so I converted to b/w, looking for a more dramatic look.

This is a sunrise a few days ago.  I bracketed three shots and merged them in HDR in Lightroom.

Really nice images this week! Deano, I like that HDR--turned out great.

Didn't do much last week, but we did manage to go on a little hike in Albion Basin up at Alta Ski Resort. The best thing about it--we watched the temperature display drop almost 20 degrees from the time we left the valley until we got up the mountains--started out around 97 and ended up around 77. I think we need a summer home in the mountains! Anyway, I'm a bit late (no time for processing), but here's a shot of my girls enjoying the abundant wildflowers up in the Basin.

Seems I'm in a 24-70 rut lately...when I have time to shoot, that is. I need to challenge myself to use something else. :)
