Hello there! I found you all online, because I need your expertise. Although I am a pretty savvy business person, with a lot of experience in sales, marketing and e-commerce, something was given to me recently, or rather, thrust upon me, that will be a blessing for my family, but possibly the avid photographers here.

My uncle passed away and left a treasure trove of almost all brand new, but older Nikon equipment, as well as Minolta lenses and much, much more. My aunt just saw two large bags full of it and was going to throw in into the garbage bin, but my husband told her it may be worth something, but she didn't care. She told him he could have it.

Both of us are recreational photographers at best, although I use a Sony Cybershot for my real estate business. We were thankful for the treasure, but we knew we would never use it. So we carefully have begun cataloging it, using a spreadsheet and bar code apps, eBay, Amazon and other pricing sites, to get an idea about the value of each of these items. It's tedious. But this equipment is so nice, the quality is amazing and I cannot believe that he never got to use it.

So I would like your advice how to best liquidate the items, to the right buyer, price it fairly, and what websites or apps would be best to use. We know an option is to go to a local camera store (we are in Wichita), but have heard you always get low-balled. From a business perspective, of course I want to maximize the potential values of these items. I have photographed most of it, and am prepared to share some of the catalog results. I just don't know where to start, and whether we should sell items piece by piece (some are discontinued items, some are still hot on the market) or just come up with a figure for both bags.

Thank you kindly in advance for your direction! Attached are just a few examples of what we have.

Warm regards,

I don't know if there's a best but eBay likely has the largest audience. Obviously no camera store is going to give you a retail price on your equipment so it's not fair to say they are low balling. As a savvy business person I'm sure you can understand why. Good luck with your sale.

There is, of course, a classified ad section on this site where you could post the items for sale at used price levels.  As hatman stated, eBay might be a good choice, but unless you set a reserve price or a fairly high starting price, you might not get what you believe it is worth.  KEH is a site that sells used gear based on the condition of each item.  It might be a good place to figure out value.  They also buy used gear...you enter the info, evaluate the condition and they will give you a tentative price.  You then send it off to them and they'll evaluate and give you a final value which you can accept or have the gear sent back to you.  I've used them quite successfully a couple of times where I got exactly what I expected out of the gear.  I am sure there are others out there as well, but I haven't used them.  Or, you could hang onto some of the gear if you are interested in getting into photography...

Yes, check the sold listings on ebay for each item and see what a fair price is.  A quick look and the stuff you showed us is probably worth $400-500, all together, minus all the eBay fees.  It will be worth much less to a camera store.  Good luck.
