So I was hired by a local machine shop to shoot parts samples for a web site. The work involved 2 main shoots of several dozen parts, and a reshoot for different aspects on 4 parts from the above shoots.

Client selected 20 shots for development/post.

My billable hours (conservatively tracked) comes out to $38/photo for the 20 selected.

Does this sound about right?

I don't know your market, but it seems reasonable even if it is on the high side for a by the image business model. If your business model is by the product, it might be on the low side. Remember that you can charge extra for unwieldy products as the setup takes longer, the same goes for products that take extra care with the lighting to get right.

There was nothing complicated about setup except a couple with really small parts (i.e. tweezers). Lighting was all done using manual strobes.

Nice shots!  I think Peter is right about the pricing...I like the per hour price but that rate has to be up relatively high if you are going to get a decent hourly rate when time is added in for post processing.  But the real rate varies based on your location, competition for the job, potential for future work, potential for future sales above the original price, etc.  It also varies on the market for the company - international vs. national vs. regional vs. local.  As long as you thought it was sufficient and they were happy, you have a chance for more business!
