D800E vs. D5200 for DX

However, 150-600 (225-900), at 900mm, which would be sharper, DX crop on D800E or the D5200?
... if D800E even win in this diciplin, it is hard to justify not to sell....
Thx

That depends on how large you will print. At A4 size or smaller, the greater downsampling from the 24 MP sensor will raise contrast and perceived sharpness to about the same level as the D800E. Another problem is holding the D5200 still with a long tele compared to the near perfect grip of the D800.
Edit: I would sell the D5200 but I don't like the D5xxx series, so my advice is probably biased.

Unfortunately, DxO never did work on Tamron 150-600 for Nikon.... If p-mp is 1.52x or more on D800E, then I cannot justify keeping D5200...
But really doubt D5200 get even 10p-mp with the glass... Question is rather, does D800E do 16p-mp...? 70-200 2.8 is 23 p-mp, as I recall

As the p-mp per megapixel is 35/36 on the D800 sensor, a DX crop will be a maximum of 15.4x35/36 in percieved megapixels. This is lower than 16... The reproduction resolution complicates things further as the loss from the aa filter is insignificant unless you print big.

How would shoot in FX and manually crop impact? Same same?
Hmm, cant help to Think it is obsolete.

Cropping is cropping...
If you do prints in the A3 size region or larger, the weaker aa filter works very much to the D800E's advantage as you will see all the detail the sensors delivers even in a cropped print.
You can always use the D5200 to show the significant other that you are responsible as you sell what you don't need anymore... This spin can make it easier to make room for a flash or filter or something in the budget.

To me the big question - do you ever need (or want or crave or .....) a second body? Would you ever carry 2 bodies with different lenses or need a backup for a critical job? It doesn't sound like it from your initial post, but those are the questions I'd ask (in addition to those that you have already addressed) and sell it in the event that you don't find the second body important...maybe you could use the funds from the sale to add another lens or some other gear to your kit and still sell it to your spouse as Peter has suggested!
My big problem is wanting too many goodies right now! I would like to add a third body (no, sorry, not a D5200 although the first two and possibly last two characters would work) and some wider glass and one of the long primes!

I think that if I had a D8xx camera it would totally spoil me against using anything less. This already happens some with my D610/D7000 combination. I sometimes have to force myself to pull out the D7000 even when I know it might be a better choice... such as when shooting with long lenses.
If you really think you'll need a second camera, and really want a DX body, I would trade the D5200 in on a D7100 or D7200 (or D500!!). I think you'll be much happier in the end.

The spoiled part really sums it up. We all want more.
I went from M4/3, Panasonic GH1 w. 14-42 + 45-200(I recall) to D5200 w. 18-55 + 55-300 + 35mm prime summer 2014, spring 2015 I changed 55-300 to 70-200 2.8, never looked back....
This summer, 24-70,150-600,D800E and picking up 50 1.8 on 29th... Going to FX and 24-70 has been a desire for years, but it sure isnt same playing field as for price...
105 Micro I will borrow for pretty unlimited time from next month... Bringing home the 200 Micro (also to be collected 29th)
Camera is one way, only better, and No doubt my 50mm 1.8 will be swapped to 50mm sigma within a year O:)
It is all about making sure wife dont worry about the cost, especially while looking for house.
PS: GH1 was great for video, but if video matters, Sony...
