Hello,

I am fairly new to photography and filmography. I am learning for work and have lots of opportunity for improvement.

I have a Nikon D3200 and have used it a couple of times to capture film. I have the problem of capturing blurry subjects when I film. The subject is blurry in the foreground and the background is quite focused. When filming I have it on AutoMode and Auto focus. Video mode is "NTSC" (no idea what that means) and AF area mode is Viewfinder, Single point AF. I am also unsure of what that means, too. I normally put it in LIveMode when capturing film (though I think you have to). I used a tripod this time, as well.

If anybody has any advice, it would help, because I am producing horrible content and affecting my professional work.

Thanks,

Michelle

It might be easier to focus manually for video.  Ensure that the subject is in focus prior to recording, then make adjustments as needed.  Another thing that might help would be to stop the lens down so you get more depth of field :)

I agree with Adam but it sounds like the "focus point" being chosen is in the background...you will want to be sure the focus point it picks (if using auto focus) is the subject that you want in focus...

Auto focus is seriously degraded with video in the majority of dlsr cameras, but even with mirrorless, practically no one shoots pro footage using auto focus.

If you have to change focus within a scene, consider mapping out the focus points ahead of time and marking the points with small pieces of tape. Getting one of those cheap, universal focus pullers on eBay might help with this.

If you are doing action scenes where mapping out focus points isn't realistic, you have the wrong camera for pro level video (consider a prosumer Canon or Sony camcorder or mirrorless).
