Hoping to take some more high ISO images within a week or so...been spending as much time as I can hanging with the family before I am back at work tomorrow and the kids head back to college later this week...
So while I was out shooting portraits of deer, I know I really didn't need to go crazy, but I figured it was a good opportunity to test out some serious ISO...So here is a single frame...D4, 105 Micro, f8, 1/400 at 204800 ISO...
RAW image imported to LR and then exported as JPEG - no changes...
Same image, only change is a close crop that isn't quite 1:1...then export
Took the cropped image and added some Luminance (50) - wasn't looking for perfect, just wanted to see what a quick change would do with the grain...
No editing other than as listed...
This was too absurd not to photograph.
It is the entrance to one of the two really good hotels downtown, but the christmas lights have fallen down from the little roof above the door.

It's nice to be able to use a fast shutter speed for the skating rink. I've done this before with Film- ISO800 just did not cut it!
And she is moving fast... I've gotten pretty good as focusing with an RF over the last 46 years.
Bump, now that the season for available dark is upon us in the northern hemisphere.
I took this shot this morning, Sep1, at a local lake at 5:30A. Handheld, D750, Tokina 17-35 @ 17mm, iso 800, 1/60 @ f.8. The only post processing to this photos is I increased the exp to +65 in LR.
Excellent idea to revive this thread Peter...I will see what I can find for some low available light shots over the next few days...I should have many opportunities today, tomorrow and Saturday and maybe even Sunday...I will certainly try to give the rental D500 a challenge to see how it handles low light...I definitely want to do a comparison between it and the D4 if I have the opportunity...
Here we go... I took a walk during the blue hour this evening.

Had a chance to grab this image while I was testing out the D500. JPEG SOOC...With a quick look at it, pretty impressive low light capability...
Settings: D500, Nikon 70-200 @ 70mm, f2.8, 1/500, ISO 25600...In the middle of wedding prep but wanted to get an image up quick...looking forward to playing with the images...Hoping for good weather (outdoor wedding, indoor reception) and wonderful photos today...
Woops...will fix that later !
So I'm back in a hotel for the week. At Peter's suggestion, and since this thread hasn't had any attention for a few months, I thought I'd give this low light challenge a try. There's not a lot of real darkness around here with all the street lights, but it's far from daylight. These photos were taken at about 6:45 pm. I was surprised at the shutter speeds required to put the meter on zero. They're not the "artiest" photos, and the horizons are a little crooked, but an interesting exercise and better than watching TV in a hotel room. Jpegs imported to Photos on my MacBook, then uploaded to Flickr. No editing or noise removal. I will have to try bumping up the ISO more next time.

Here are some from me. The first three are from my one lens... challenges, but having them in one place is nice.

I love the long-throw focus of this lens, makes it very easy to "follow-focus" the moving skaters. This particular lens is about 60 years old. My older 8.5cm F2 is from 1949, the same batch as the one that impressed David Douglas Duncan enough to visit the Nikon factory.
Let's bump this thread instead of starting a new one. As you might have seen in the Normalvember thread, insanely low light is what I get to work with outdoors this time of the year anyway. I'll try to get out with D300, D7200, D700, D750 and maybe some with the D-lux the coming weeks.
