A nice deal on the refurbished D7100 at Adorama:

Very tempting, as I'm a shooter that bounces back and forth between wide and long, and coming to FX, I no longer have the crop factor that makes a 70-300 into 450 at the long end.  My Tamron 70-300 VC would look pretty darn nice on a 7100 used as a second body.  Very tempting...

I have a question.  That is, how does it come down to a high quality camera as this one that needs to be refurbished?  I am amazed that with typical Nikon quality, it should out last the next several generations. Also, this item is no longer available.

Thanks,

Tony

Refurbs are often demo cameras and open-box returns that are sent back to Nikon, checked, repacked in neutral boxes and sold at a lower price and a shorter warranty. They can often be a result of the no-questions-asked returns policy in some chain stores. Stocks never last long, but if one checks regularly it is possible to get one at a bargain price.

Peter hit it on the head...it is one way to get a "new" camera with a warranty at a lower cost...you can find pretty much the same thing with lenses, flashes and occasionally accessories as well if you keep checking...some shops (brick and mortar as well as online) sell used gear with some form of warranty too.

I have come close to picking up some refurbished gear but never have pulled the trigger.  On the flip side, I've bought lots of used gear over the years...No particular reason it has ended up that way since I'd be OK purchasing refurbished - just never worked out...
